question about replacing rear main seal (cross post)
after accumulating 1600 miles on the rebuild, i have pulled the engine again because it looks like the rear main seal is leaking. this was a brand new seal i placed (the light brown type)
how can i insert it correctly so it doesn't leak again?

I have used silicone adhesive in the passed with good success. Excessive crank case pressure will blow seals out. Lay off the boost until the rings have seated properly. It the motor is out redo the hard to get to seals with silicone.

i don't have a turbo, just a 944S.
i think i found part of the problem - the seal wasn't completely seated. the flywheel rubbed off part of the outer surface, so i just need to seat the new one properly

Don't use silicone. Make sure that the surfaces are clean and free of scratches. oil the inside lip of the seal before you install it and you should be fine.
Nevermind, you posted before I finished writing this....
Make sure it's seated properly!
