Danny, Those clarions will not fit. I had them for a while and switched to some pioneer 4x6s. These at least fit with the grills on, but still not flush.

Well, I've ordered the Boston Acoustics... supposedly others have used them... we'll see how they do in a few days... paid $99 shipped and insured. they list for $130 so I spent more than I intended, but I think they'll go in the back once I upgrade the front door panels

I just bought some wood. I am going to make a 6" speaker pod and put in a woofer for bass. Badly needed in the car...

I put the 4x6 Infinity kappa plates in my car. Not a perfect fit, but good enough in my opinion.

I had to dremel out the hole a little bigger as the magnet was too large to fit in the existing hole, also had to mount 1/4" washers behind the plates to make it fit right, which of course made the plates stick out 1/4" too far. I was able to use the stock grills however. Unless you really look at it, it looks just fine, it's only when you really look at it you'll see the gap....but the bulge in the panel hides it from view for the most part. I think if you were to put some type of spacer behind the panel in that area to move it out just slightly, or if you put some sort of rubber trim around the plates....nobody would know the difference.

Would it be insane to put an 8" sub in each door with a custom pod? Anyone?

I'd think that by the time you raised the mounting surface of your pod out far enough to have the magnet clear the window, it would be halfway into your leg.

yeah, that would be insane... i think the biggest I'd go would be 5 1/4" speakers and just use a sub in one of the cubbies.. the bigger the speaker, the bigger and deeper the magnet.

Well... most 8" subs have a mounting depth of high 2 - 4". 1.5 or slighty more can go into the door, so you have 1 - 2 inches max coming out. One I found was 2 3/4, so thats 1 1/4 inches out which would put it in line with the door pocket!

Hmm...at that depth, it wouldn't be too bad. You could actually make an enclosure similar to the 10 speaker setup (it essentially fills the door pocket with speakers).

But how good a speaker is it? I imagine a speaker that was designed with mounting depth as such a high concern would have to make sacrifices to sound quality. I would look into which would sound better...a thin 8" sub or a well-designed 6.5 component speaker setup (with subs in the trunk).

There is a Kicker at 2 5/16 flush mount depth... most others are mid 3" - low 4".

Nz,
I actually used those 4x6 in my recent set up without the factory grill and they look pretty good. Added about 1/4" piece of black rubber to account for the space. Sounds extremely good - 6x5 in the back
