Default Mahle 100.5 and 101mm Pistons

I just had a very interesting conversation with a gentleman at Mahle. As we all have seen in recent threads, there is shortage of MAhle pistons in the two factory oversizes, 100.5 and 101mm. Yes Tom C has an aftermarket solution but some still believe it's a bit unproven for the long haul; we have had great success but I thought I would call Mahle.

To get to the short of it, I expressed that there would probably be great support World Wide for both oversize pistons, as the cars age and suffer cylinder damage. I mean Jim and I alone have 3 sets of aftermarket pistons going in use. I also mentioned how many people were looking for good blocks due to scoring, etc.

The person is going to come here, register, and join to see how much support will be generated for the start up Mahle aftermarket pistons in 100.5 and 101mm. The type of factory coating that is presently available is Feroprint, which is presently on the pistons with the Cayenne, many BMW and Mercedes. Ferostan, the original factory coating is no longer available because of environmental regulations. Feroprint would work in Alusil bores, no problem.
He got out both sets of drawings of the 100.5 and 101 pistons, they were right there in his book and he was going to talk to his boss down the hall.

So, if you would be interested in a set of 100.5 and 101mm factory pistons, coming in cheaper than the high $1695, post up a Yes. No approximate price was talked about but he was almost certian they could beat that with no problem.
Mahle is going to look here to see the support/interest and may post a question themselves. This is not a 100% certian event but...
Interst? If so, gimme a yes.

Hahaha, don't say that, you're cursing the engine!
Although, I know somebody who's turbo will need a rebuild soon, and I'd put money on it he will have to bore out (burns quite a bit of oil, and it's _definately_ rings).
So, count me in for 1 yes.

JE pistons you have to install sleeves which add $$, so it all comes up the same in the end. Like I said, no price was mentioned, he actually coughed when I told him what the last set of 100.5 cost - that I was quoted.

I would be very pleased to have OEM parts to use but buying a set depends on what my pistons look like when I re ring my motor.
165kmiles and counting.

When I had to rebuild a scored block, my mechanic told me the pistons were $500. Not bad, I said. Pause. EACH, he said. That's when I coughed. If Mahle prices them reasonably, and has more than one oversize, they could have a market for a long time. Great intitiative on your part, Ski, to call them. Maybe you should have told him the pistons were $425. I don't need any right now, but if they were available at a good price, I might buy some as spares. Now if we could get someone to make aluminum sleeves again...

I'd be interested also - particularly in the turbo c/r of 8.0:1. Actually if they wanted to appeal to a different market, they could offer ones that bump up c/r slightly - maybe 8.25:1 or 8.5:1 in a forged construction. I know I'd pay a little more for that!

Pricing will be critical; if there's any chance of getting a set for under $800-$1,000 I'd buy two in a heartbeat.

Yeah, but you didn't hear the sinister laugh and cash-register ringing after he got off the phone...
