Default Starter Motor

Is there a soleniod repair kit
for the starter motor ?
My starter motor has been acting
up lately. Seems like the pinion
gear is taking a little longer to
to retract after start up causing
a grinding sound.

Just replace the solenoid. That is fairly cheap. I'd get one for you but the shipping to Taiwan probably wouldn't make sense. The solenoid is a heavy little sucker.

The pinion gear not retracting is a common problem. Clean the clutch dust off off the shaft and see if that frees things up. There are two schools of thought on lubricating the shaft. I wouldn't other than powered graphite as grease may attract clutch dust and gum up again.

Also sounds like you may have chewed up the pinion gear some if you have been grinding it. If that is the case make sure your supplier knows you have a 944. Our cars' Bosch starters spin opposite than most (maybe all) Bosch starters in that shell as we have transaxles and the starter mounts in the rear of the bellhousing. So our pinion gear is unusual and may take awhile to find the correct one.

try spraying some brake dust cleaner in there... obviously wait a while before starting the motor or even some wd-40 might work.. you just want to break some of the clutch and dirt off so it is spins freely...

That or a new solenoid

I think it was $30 with the shipping in the lower 48 USA last time I got one for a Rennlister. Probably be a few bucks more with oil going up.

But it is the best option to keep a starter you know and trust if it hasn't been beaten to death. One starter and alt rebuilder commented that our starters were built like the proverbial "brick ****house". You want to save it if you can.

Give cleaning a shot and test it on the bench to see what happens. Better have it held down tight or in a vise when you fire it up as it is quite powerful and is going to want to twist around.

One problem you may not be able to solve is if the solenoid has been damaged. Those can rust up inside the guts or the electrical posts can break. You will find out soon enough when you put it on the bench.
