Default Help me quiet my exhaust

So my wife will ride with me. My 951 has a Weltmeister test pipe and a SFR cat back, and I'd like to quiet some of the raspy barkiness, especially at part throttle around town. Yeah, I know I'm a sissy, what can I say? I'd like a more subtle and low, mellow sound, without spending a fortune or losing much HP or spool time. Doable? Ideally, there would be something I could just have welded in, any ideas?

Ditch the test pipe and install a stock CAT, or get a "universal" CAT welded into the test pipe.

Are there any off the shelf resonators that would accomplish this same purpose? Seems like that would keep the backpressure down, as well as be cheaper.

When you are back up in KC, come by and i will swap you my stock cat back for the SFR one That will quiet it down. I love the way your car sounds.

Ben already made me that offer, but I have the stock exhaust from my car. I love the sound at WOT, I'd just like to take the edge off a little around town. That said, if I can't come up with any cheap solution, I'll just stop being a sissy.

Hi,
My car came to me with a B&B Cat back exhaust and was REALLY loud. Turned out the resonator had an issue so I went down to ye olde muffler shoppe and asked him to replace the resonator with a quieter one. Big improvement. I think it was some type of 'turbo' model of resonator.

After a few months I still thought it was too loud so I went down and had him take out the aftermarket muffler and replace it with something quiter. I think I went from a 1 baffle to a 3 baffle... but I have no other details.

MUCH better in my opinion. Sound is a matter of personal taste, but I just prefer it quieter. If you have a reputable shop near you - the kind that can custom fabricate almost anything - I'd just stop in and ask them what my options were.

Good Luck,

Phil

Well, heck, if you have the stock exhaust then you won't need mine....you can just drop that cat back off at imagine auto some day, me and ben will fight for it...he's a delicate flower though.

That might be worth it just to watch. We could start a pool on the KCWS site and take bets. KCWS wrenching party Main Event!

Have you considered Tim's Resonator? About half way down the page (click here) Call him and inquire.

I have a high-flow cat for sale, posting the ad soon! Actually I just fit another cat and the difference in sound was pretty much zero, still lots of growl. Louder is better!

Hally, that's along the lines of what I was considering, just curious if anyone could suggest a particular muffler that would weld onto the 3" SFR. More fishing for ideas than anything. Mark, I'd like to avoid a cat as we don't have emissions testing, if anything I'd go with a resonator similar to what Scott recomended. The only problem is that you have to have a SFR test pipe to use the resonator, about $800 for the two.
