Question Wastegate venting sound?

Hi All,

I've been searching through the archives and can't seem to find an answer to this simple question. What is the sound of the wastegate venting exhaust to reduce boost? I pay close attention to how my car sounds and recently noticed a new sound when under full throttle, full boost (my stock boost gauge being pegged to the right). Under these conditions I hear a rattly/rushing sound coming from under the left side of the car. As soon as I let off the gas a bit it goes away. Is this the wastegate dumping extra exhaust pressure? I know it's not the dreaded bypass valve "turkey gobble" because I recently replaced that with an Evolution Motorsports unit. I've done an inspection and can't seem to find any loose connections or vacuum leaks. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

You would get gobble when you come off boost, not wen you are making boost.

WHen you say left, do you mean the turbo side of the car? Or correclty the WG side?

You may have a IC pipe connector leak, that makes a venting sound if you have a hole in it and it expands under boost...

Yes, I do mean the turbo and WG side of the car. I'll check the IC pipes tomorrow.

The turbo and WG are on different sides... the turbo being your drivers side, and the WG is closer to the passenger side.

Maybe you are confusing the Bypass Valve with the WG?

"rattly/rushing sound" describes the sound pretty well actually. You may want to get under there and check.

I remember the W/G sound was different when I switched to the Tial. I dont remember hearing a thing with the stock W/G but I do hear a tone difference with the Tial. Not a leak sound, just a change in exhaust tone.

It's probably your WG. Since you drive on the left side, it sounds like its on that side even though it's pretty well under the car. My WG bleeds a bit too much and doesn't really hold boost well. As a result, I can hear it bleed boost while under throttle (sounds like a steady PSSSssssst) and it sounds like its coming from the left side.
