I've owned an unmodified '89 951 for about 8 years, and an unmodified '87 328GTS for about 7 years now (I love keeping them standard for some strange reason!). I've tracked them both, though am pretty inexperienced in comparison to many other listers here. I passionately love both cars, but they are both very very different. THe 9051 is driven every day, the 328 on sunny weekends.

I nearly didn't buy the 328 because when I test drove it, it didn't feel anywhere near as fast as the 951. Luckily when I told the salesman this, he took me for a spirited drive in the 328. Wow. When it's pushed by a good driver, it's insane. The sound, the power is enormous. I would hotly dispute any of the previous comments that the 951 will toast a 328. I'm sure a modified 951 would easily though.

I firmly believe there's not a lot of difference between the cars in terms of performance. There's heaps of other differences though, some of which have been mentioned, some haven't yet.

At the end of the day the 328GTS is sexy
as hell which the 951 will never ever be.
The 328 is my next target but I guess it
would be a couple of years before I can
afford it.

Porsche and Ferrari have always been two very different approches to performance. Most Porsche models are very driver friendly. I like to say it was designed and engineered so well it practically drives itself

The Ferrari is not meant for that. It is meant to make your palms sweat on a hard, fast right hander and to hear the motor and not know if you will make it off the track in one piece

Yes, on the dyno my car will pull exactly to 6500 before the revlimiter kicks in.

Gotcha.

I guess aftermarket chips do not take out the rev limit?

No, you'd never want them to take the revlimiter completely out. Depending on the car/engine you might raise it a little bit from stock, but that's about it.

That's IF a 328 can make a 1/4 mile without dumping all its oil on the runway.......
The issue I have says the 951 non-S got the 1/4 in 14.6.

Some do and some don't. Guru chips don't. I've bounced off the rev limit (6500 rpm) more than once and every time it's scared the daylights out of me!

I would NEVER, EVER buy a set of chips that removed the revlimiter completey, UNLESS I had some other form of revlimiter in place. Whether at the stock point or raised to match whatever engine internals you have, it is a MAJOR safety feature that will keep you from grenading your motor. It won't stop you from overrevving if you downshift while going to fast for the lower gear, but it will keep you from overreving from either not paying attention, or the tach being slow (very common on many cars).

And re a 951 keeping up with a 355 - not a snowball's hope in hell!
I've tried, but my friend was driving at 6 tenths in his 355, I was driving at 10 tenths and was really struggling. Check the 355 spec's - it's just not going to happen!
