I have 205's on the front, and while I haven't tried them on the track, for spirited street driving and everyday use, they work fine. No issues with braking, and they also don't look "goofy as hell", but hey, I guess that part's subjective :-)
Agree that 225's on the front is the optimal size. I will be going to that when I need new tires.

Brad, you have 205/XXR17? What are the XXs? A 205/45R17 is very short, it is the size you re likely to see on a lowered accord. HUGE differene from a 205/45 to a 205/50, nearly an INCH in height.

Ben use a 225/45R17. Most 993 Cup IIs are 7" fronts. IIRC they did use a 7.5" on the M030 968s.

Which is exactly why I bought 8" wheels for the 245's. I'll be putting my 17x7 cup wheels with brand new 205/50 tires on ebay this weekend.
It's a proven fact that tires are the most effective with the least amount of tread. I often race on bald tires. I'm with ya on the stuck caliper - not a lot of fun....

One tire manufacturer probably spends as much in a month on testing as the sum of ALL Porsche tuners spend in their business life cycle.

Alex, it looked like you were saying that Lindsey was running X so I am going to follow suit.
You should look into running 9s all around. Just get two sets of rears. Problem is the fronts arent worth much.

Yep. The original question was about running a 204/45R17 which is .8" shorter than the tire you are running. Imagine having .5" less sidewall and you will know why I say it looks goofy!

I have that wheel combo on my 86' 951. The 205's always seemed to whimpy to me, felt like a lot of understeer. Mine were off a 993 and still had good Pilots on them. I assumed that the rear engine cars did not have the awesome 944 weight distribution and could get away with the small fronts. I now have 225/45s and 275/40s. The 225s look and feel much better. Bill

currently I have 235 40 17's on eight inch rims up front and 265 40 17's on the 10inch rims in the rear.
Compared with stock, the front is a little bit lower. Should I be running 235 45 or 245 40 or do you think 235 40 is about right.

OK, got some good solid advise and I am going to run 225/45/17 fronts and 255/40/17 rears.
Really glad that I got the right advise before mounting some 205/45/17 on the car.

I am about to order a dedicated set of track tires, thinking Victoracers. I have only tracked the phone dials and the rubber is almost gone. I was intending on putting them back on the 16" phone dials, but maybe the 17" 993 wheels would be a better choice. Anyone tried 16" vs 17" and has some suggestions?

Sidewall flex is negligible, from what I've heard.

I am a little concerned about using Hoosiers. A lot of racers were complaining that the Hoosier S04 were wearing out in one day. One guy was demanding that the Hoosier team ( mounting tires at the race) replace all four of his tires.
