To buy or not to buy a RED 951
#16
I have two '86 944's--one red, one black. The red one looks great! When I looked at the black one, it just wasn't the same--something about red sports cars...and, as someone else mentioned, hard to keep clean. I spent two weeks hand-sanding the black one with 400 grit, including door jams and window frames, and it is currently in the shop for a $4,000 Guards Red paint job. I debated about other colors since I already had a red one, but it still comes back to RED!

dmw are you suncoast? Do you go to DE's? Are you new to St. Pete? I am from/parents live in clearwater. I do suncast events with my pile. My dad has started taking his new pile (04' cobra).

Hey! I have lived in St. Petersburg most of my life. I belong to the Suncoast Region PCA and PBOC. I run my 911SC RS at all of the Suncoast Region, Gold Coast Region, and PBOC DE's at Sebring, as well as some events at Moroso. Someday I'll have to get serious and try Roebling Road and Homestead...Maybe you have seen my Platinum SC--# 44. Photos at: groups.msn.com/porschelovers--pca. I'll be at the March 26 event at Sebring. BTW, I'm also a UF grad--GO GATORS! Regards, Doug

The sick thing is we probably know each other, and we don't even actually know it on here. I guess i would say i am very young (24) so that puts me out pretty easy. My dad is kinda old (55). We usually bring the 930 and the 951 and we have the cobra now. People know who I am. Just tell them there is this kid with a 951 that is an engineer in law school at UF. Cheslock. They will tell you. Talk to like Dave, Rich tillitson etc.. I can't make the next event because I am first semester here at law.So...

If you want attention, get a Guards Red 951. I swear, I get way more attention in mine that I did even in my red Z06 (although I never got any tickets in it, and regularly did 10-15 over). As for tickets, it really doesn't matter a hill of beans what color your car is. If you don't want a ticket, don't speed. If you want to chance it (speeding) get a good radar detector (Passport 8500 or V1) and PAY ATTENTION TO IT. As to laser, the 951 is easy to get a read off of whether it's black, red or white, there's just too much flat surface on the front to reflect the laser back. The best car for avoiding laser (actually tested several years back by one of the big magazines) is the 93-97 Firebird. It's pointed plastic nose has no flat surfaces to reflect the signal back, and is much harder to get a good read off of with a laser (and yes, black does make it harder to pick up as well). Even with one of those in black though, they will still get a read once you get close enough.

Nothing like "is there a problem officer" Red. I've gotten 3 tickets in the last 6 months. Two in my '03 Maxima, and one in a friends 993tt. I've earned them all-and paid a ton to get out of them. I drive the 944 pretty sanely-but usually 5-10 over and (knock on wood) never an issue. I think yellow is the worst color for attention-of course, the radar gun doesn't care.

I haven't gotten any tickets in either of my two 951's since I've owned them. (well, no tickets that I've had to actually pay, anyways, they were both thrown out in court..) And I can promise you that I don't take it easy with the car, I drive it hard! The secret is knowing when to slow down.
I like Red. I own TWO red cars. fairly easy to keep clean!!!

And if I had to do it again, I would buy a red 951 again. Sure it might be slightly more of a cop magnet (and ive been there done that) but on the other hand, it is safer in traffic, and pretty damn eye catching anywhere else too.
And Porsche and red are like beer and cold... Snow and skiing... Hawaii and sun.
