Default Anyone have a front hub crack???

Here is a pic of my friends drivers side hub from the Sebring club race. This cracked during practice and got back to the pits before anything bad happend. Anyone else had this happen to their track car? If so what is the life span of this part? Friends car is a turbo S. A couple of guys at the track said this is common and a couple of club racers are working on a billeted alum. part that will solve this problem. If anyone has a extra hub laying around please let me know. I need to start carrying a spare for the upcomming race season. TIA

Fairly common failure, unfortunately. Inspect the hubs as part of your daily pre-flight, and any time you have run the gators hard. You do NOT want the ride that follows a hub failure at speed.

Yikes.

I have mine off the car right now. I'll be sure to check them VERY carefully before I put them back on.

I guess all the more reason to stay off the gators (and away from Sebring)...

Jerome - do you not have a "hat" style rotor on your '89??

Jim,
I use stock (OE) rotors. Anything different about them or the effect on the hub?

Actually, I have a hat style rotor in front - Is mine MO30, or something? It was like that when I bought it 4years ago.
I don't have that aluminum hub - but I have seen them many times.
I thought that Porsche switched the hub style in 87 - I guess my PO switched to MO30, if you don't have hats.

Never seen or heard of anything like that happening with any year, model, offset 944. Thanks for the heads up and the picture.

Seems I pi$$ed of the hub gods by posting that hub failures are fairly common!

Running a high speed right hander last Friday, the front left felt very weird - as if it had lost alignment. Given this was the first run since rebilding the engine [suspension off and on several times], I backed out of it to pull in and take a look. The hub had failed - three major cracks had opened up enough to break of ABS ring and the inner bearing race.

So, anyone selling a pair of turbo S hubs? I need to replace one, and like Eric I will carry a spare from here on in. Was lucky enough to be able to 'borrow' one for the weekend, but need to put it back on the donor car tomorrow.

What is the deal with the billet hub project? Anyone have a contact for this? I suspect they will be making the smaller pre-S size first, because there are more of those cars. The larger S hubs [Turbo S, 968 M030 only, I think] are what I need.

It has been rumored that turboS hubs and spindles are the stongest and the best for track duty.

Now there are two examples of turboS hubs failing.

Maybe these hubs aren't the way to go?

I presently have M030 and regular hubs on my bench, and aside from the ABS ring, can't see any difference. On the bench, the regular hub apparently fits the S spindle. Other than the S spindle taking the S4/big red calipers without an adaptor, I'm beginning to doubt the conventional wisdom that S spindles/hubs are better/stronger, since they both use the same bearings.

Maybe the '87/88 non S with ABS hub had the same part no. as the "S"?

There is a Turbo S somewhere in the NOVA area that is currently missing its driver side hub. All will be cool if I get it off my car and back on the donor by Wednesday.

Which car and where? Don't ask, don't tell rules apply.

If I can help out with an extra let me know, I can hold off on putting mine on, if you need something to roll the car around on for a couple of days / weeks.

Thanks Eric - might take you up on that if I can't find hubs for something less that the outrageous $770 a piece that the local dealer is asking. In any case, I'm running the Zone 2 event at VIR end of the month, so it has to be resolved in two weeks max.

BTW, I still have parts here - header and intercooler duct - that are yours. Come and get 'em.
