I have owned LT-1 and LS-1 Firebird Formulas and the LS-1 is a great engine. It revs quick all the way to redline and pulls all the way to redline. I am sure it would destroy a transaxle if driven hard, but a transaxle a year would still be cheaper than regular maintenace on our stock motors.
No."

300HP on the 944 turbo is / can be VERY relaible.... its all about tuning and how it is achieved. The torque and HP potential of the V8 is / can obviously be more, but you will be going through so many tranny's and CV etc whats the point of it if it cant be used. When I talk about the greater HP potential I am talking 500+ WHP.

300 hp is really not that much for a 944 T engine. I've owned/raced, sold a 944 t that was internally stock (and at 237k or so miles today no less), which has put down 312 ft-lbs to the wheels with less than $500 in modifications...

As regards cost, I reckon that the parts cost (kit, optional parts that in reality you need to get, and an engine) will run you $8K.
You can definitely get more than 300-bhp out of a modified 951 for $8K, so using a stock LS-1 doesn't really get you that much. However, if you wanted to go the modified LS-1 route, getting up to 450-bhp with quick throttle response, zero turbo lag, etc - it can be done for far less money than with the 951 motor.
Now this is going to sound strange... but one of the reasons the LS-1 kit caught my eye is that if done properly, it might actually pass CA smog - assuming you fitted all of the original emissions equipment that was originally fitted with that engine from the donor car.
I belive that its going to get harder and harder to smog modified 951s here in CA. The CA-DMV is getting tougher and tougher.
As weird as it sounds, I think it might be easier to get a legal LS-1 (assuming you're diligent about installing all the associated emissions equipment) into a 944/951/968 here in CA than trying the modified forced induction route...
Karl.

I've owned LT1s, an LS1, an LS6, and currently have an LT4 Firehawk, and I really just don't see the point in putting any of those in a 944. A big part of the fun in a 951 for me is the turbo, if I want to drive a fast V8 car I grab the Keys to the Firehawk. It's faster than the 951, but it's also a completely different driving experience. As for reliability, yes the LTx and LSx engines are very reliable, but putting one in a 944 would probably lead to lots of other reliability issues (transaxle, CVs, etc). If you want a V8, buy a car that is designed for it (Firebird/Camaro or Corvette). They'll have a lot better reliability and lower maintenance cost than a Porsche ever will.

I'll admit that driving the GM F-body is a different experience than my 951. The 951 takes more attention and more skill to go fast. You have to know the car to keep it on the boost. The big V-8 is a no-brainer with all of it's torque. If you drive into a corner too slow, the torque will get you out and make up for the lost time.
I am sure the V-8 would put a lot of strain on drivetrain items, but so does does a high horsepower Porsche motor. And if someone can get 300hp out of my car for $500 I sure would like to know how. I know the LS-1 motors pretty much put out 300 to the wheels in stock form on 6-speed cars. They are rated at 305, but quite frequently put out a lot more from the factory.
I love my Porsche powered car and would love to have 300 hp or better yet, 400 and for someone wanting to try something different the LS-1 is a GREAT choice. As for me, I like the challenge of making my car faster and further enjoy the satisfaction of being faster than someone in something they think is fast.
