Newbe E/Bay Hell need advice
Purchased an 86 951 engine 86k miles in excellent running condition barley broke in so the ad reads for $2750.
My first view of the motor I noticed the fuel rail was welded one of the mounting legs was welded on or cut in half and welded toegether I can't tell.
When I saw this I thought Uhhhh Ohhhh. after a week of tearing the motor down this is a list of what I found . 1. All hoses vacum lines need replacment
2. 4 smiley faced pistons 3. 4 bad lifters with oil could squeeze with thumb and fore finger. 4. bad clutch 5. pitted cam 6. bad front and rear main bearings. 7 oil pan cracked 8. wiring harness connectors broken or missing. 9 head is big question mark he say's leak test was great . I say I can't take the chance.
I put a stop payment the guy I am dealing with say's I expect to much this is normal for an 86 951 what do you all say?

2. Mine are that way since a bad day in August '04.
3. That's odd.
4. Typical.
5. Odd.
6. Bad bad bad. Or do you mean seals, not bearings? Then typical.
7. Not good, what cracked it?
8. Typical, see no. 1
9. Don't trust him.
Did you pay $2750? If so you got what you paid for. All old 951s have cooked plastic and rubber parts under the intake and they all leak oil everywhere. UNLESS...somebody already fixed that stuff.

Sorry, I didn't finish my reply, interrupted by the phone.
Car sounds like a nightmare. Did you actually buy it without a pre-purchase inspection? But if you only paid 2750, you weren't ripped off. Always buy the best example you can afford. Unless you're rich, you can't afford a cheap 951.

Track car! This is not meant to sound harsh I promise, but what did you expect for $2750 and what do you intend to do with it: daily, sometime track, track car...how is the interior?
Sorry just read another post...you just bought the engine or whole engine assembly, you said something about clutch.

It sounds to me like you only bought the engine, though Deitz enterpreted it as being a whole car... If it is just the engine, then you paid tooo much, but if it is a whole car, then 2750 is probably fair if it is complete.

It is just the engine..
I have contacted my credit card company they are in the process of returning my money.
I have been in contact with the person I purchased the engine to make arrangements to return the motor which is a little sticky because I live on the west coast he lives on the east coast.
I am tempted to offer him a salvage price for the motor and then junk it. Does 200-400 sound like
a fair salvage price? He does not appear recepttive to accepting it back what recourse do I have?
He insists it is my motor and I can do what I want with it.
Thanks,

Ouch, that's alot o dough for piece o uno what. I'd bet the turbo, if it's still on it is shot too. False advertising is fraud! If you paid for it with a credit card start that route, e-bay may be some help, paypal is a pain in the a$$, I've had a problem with a item I bought once and it took about a month to get it taken care of.
IF, the block is in good shape it woould have some salvage value, if not run away!
By the way do you have the link for the item, I'm wondering if it's one I may have bid on?

Yeah, I agree that iis too much for that.
You can get a well running 951 engiine from Robert at Dc auto - and he will take anything back with good reason. I got to know him well before he moved to North Carolina.
He is around $2500 for documented 80,000 miles and $1,800 for documented 120,000 mile.
These are engines ready to be put in a driver - nevermind broken parts.

Here is the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWA:IT
I thought with a 99.3% feedback his product was going to be as advertised. That old saying buyer beware is sooooo true. I guess I will just store the motor and wait and see how all this shakes out.
I am very curious how much abuse does it take to wear out front and rear main bearings on the 951?
is just poor maintence driving abuse or both? How long will a normaly maintained 951 mains last?
Thanks,

While I am at it...
Would not the noise from 4 bad lifters (yes 4 bad lifters I could easly depress the tops of the lifters with my finger one was so bad there was no spring restance at all ). the noise din racket sound like an aging
T72 Tank ? He claims when the motor was running it had " no strange noises, smoke or other symptoms" I just want an outside opion to confirm for me this nightmare is real and the reality is this guy had tried to screw me without using any KY and I have right not to pay him one more penny.
