Default Newbie here with a couple of questions

I have a chance to purchase an '89 944 turbo S with the following performance upgrades: K-27 turbo, Tial 46mm dual-port wastegate, GURU chip, Manual Boost Controler w/VDO boost gauge, K&N air filter. I have a few questions for you guys:

1. He says he is making about 320hp (not rwhp) at 14psi. I am wondering what else would be required to make a safe 350-400rwhp on 91 octane and how much this would cost.

2. The car has 122k miles on it and appears to be in excellent condition inside and out, w/ rebuilt heads and a number of other replaced components. The seller is asking $15,600, is this a reasonable price?

3. Assuming everything is in good excellent condition and routine maintenence has been completed, can this car with this many miles on it be counted on as a reliable daily driver?

Thanks in advance!

1. You would need a bigger turbo and some head work and exhaust to make a "safe" boost 350-400WHP, if you want to do it on 91, then you may need water injection to supress detonation and run more aggressive timing.

2. The price seems high.

3. Many people have them as daily drivers, I do. But be prepared to have some "down time" maintaining it.

Thanks for the quick replies! So what kind of rwhp is the k27 capable of with the right injectors, tuning, exhaust/downpipes, etc on 91 octane (without cams or headwork)? what about race gas?

what price would you say would be right? The exterior and interior seem to be in pristine condition with all records of maintenace.

This car will be used as a daily driver, with occasional track and auto-x useage.

What hotside is it?

K27/6 gets 300-330whp on 18psi+ (varies)

K27/8 gives you ~10-15whp more but also more power comes with more lag

The price is definately high. I don't know how far down it would have to come to be reasonable though.

I wouldn't try to make 350-400rwhp _and_ use it as a daily driver, unless, of course, you turn the boost down for daily driving. Making that kind of power tends to accelerate wear by a significant amount.

951's make great occasional track/auto-x cars. My 951 is going to become my daily driver (winter and all) once I get it back together.

he said that it spooled up quick so I think it would be the k27/6. I suppose I could live with 330rwhp so daily driving at 18psi is safe on this engine and 91 octane?

I am also wondering, as the prices on these cars seem to vary alot and I am not quite sure what to offer.

As long as the a/f ratio and timing is adressed then it should be fine.........

try running 93 US gas, higher octane rating is better in reducing detonation (along with proper timing)......

Price is on the high side though....

What would be appropriate?

It seems that only www.nada.com has an accurate guide for 951s and even that is a little off from the pricing I have seen.

Richard,
I am not very familiar with the US market and prices. However, the market for the 944 here is more/less the same in terms of value with the US.

I got my car for $4,000, and when compared with some 944's in similar condition, the prices was almost the same.

Regarding that car, $15,000 is expensive, but it should literally be perfect. All screws, covers and things that get 'missing' should be there.

Also remember, if you spend $3K+ on modifications, don't expect to get that price back when selling.....

I would love to see pics of this. I cant control myself...buying a modded car is definantly a better approach than modding a car from stock. I hate myself for buying the m3 bone-stock

I paid 13K for my 86 this past July. Maybe a bit high but with 60K miles and perfect paint and interior who cares. You can blow a grand or two in a heartbeat with these cars, and thats just on maintainence! Have you driven it? A 300+ rwhp 951 will eat most new cars out there.
Take care,
Josh
