Default switching fuel maps in an 86

The later cars have the altitude sensor line to mess around with to change between 3 separate fuel maps on the DME eprom.

86 does not have this ability, does anyone know how to convert? Danno mentioned something about it in one of his posts, but no details. Is it possible?

Altitude sensor? Is that the later car's version of the FQS?
What's it look like and how do you adjust it?
I have APE Stage II chips, what setting should it be on?

No, the fqs does 1 change across the board while the altitude switch changes maps that can be finely adjusted. You should have FQS all the way counter clockwise, position 1, and leave the altitude stuff alone.

Default 1.8K Ohms

In the schematics it shows two different ways. The US cars (cat equiped) have the altitude switch located above the passengers feet that leans out the mixture above something like 3,000 feet. The Euro (non Catalyst) cars have a 1.8K Ohm resistor installed instead of the altitude switch. There is also a jumper installed between pins 1 and 3 at the O2 sensor connector, DME side, in the engine compartment.

I have an '86 and it does have the altitude sensor, I have run my car both ways and can feel no difference in the power. I haven't dynoed it so I can give you no hard numbers. I have been told the in the "Euro" mode that the DME will run in open loop at a slightly richer mixture which can damage the cat over time. I do notice a slight drop if gas milage when in the "Euro" mode.

Hope that this helps.

Thanks Mark,

What does the FQS switch look like?
Where's it located? Any pictures?

Thank you.

Darius, The cover on the DME has a plastic plug. When you remove the plug you can see a 8-pos switch.. That's the FQS
