Default k26-6 or k26-8 turbo? *the definitive guide!*

after some research and not being able to find a 'faq' about identifying the different turbo's without removing any parts, i think i've figured out a failproof way to determine which factory stock turbocharger is installed on the car. keep in mind that the stock 'part number' that's visible on the cold side will NOT help you identify the different turbos, as the numbers are the same for both.

first, a look at the two different turbochargers, notice that the k26-6 has a visible 'flat square' on the hotside. this is visible from above the engine bay with the turbo installed:

to see the spot clearly, you can shine a flashlight down alongside and just in front of the engine oil dipstick:

then if you look at a 45-degree angle from the front towards the bottom of the dipstick, you should be able to clearly identify if the turbocharger has the 1" flat square.
square present = k26-6
square absent = k26-8

this image is of a k26-6:

many thanks to laust, lou, david, and asarus for their help!

if anyone with a 951 faq site would like to copy and present this information on their site, please let me know and i'd be happy to provide high-res photos! or just let me know what the link is so i can refer other people to the site. thanks!

Depends on where you are. Obviously it is not possible for every scrut to be hip to every possible detail. But I don't think it would be wise to cheat with parts easily distinguished visually by your competition or a scrut "in the know".

Cross drilling the crank, a non-conforming clutch, or "special" rebuilt stock turbo may be easier to get away with

I thought also there was some place on the hot side that you could just measure and if it was 6 cm it is #6 and 8cm it is #8??

No flat spot on my '88 car. It is supposed to be a -8 from Lindsey. Dyno #'s show it probably is the bigger unit too

Too cold and dark to check the '89 car outside. Maybe tomorrow.
