Hosrom has a point, better to check the TPS's electrical connectors themselves:

pins# 4 & 6: connected when throttle closed
pins#4 & 6 : no connection when throttle open

I've found a couple of TPSs that clicked, but the electrical states weren't correct.

follow up:

my tps (both the old and new one) does, indeed, click. i guess my hearing is shot so i couldn't hear the click unless i had my ear right up next to it. i didn't think the click would be that soft and initially thought the sound was being made by the throttle cam hitting the metal stopper.

thanks to everyone for the feedback and asarus for the video!

and danno; i still think that your backfiring problem is also related to a faulty tps. have you tried swapping it with a brand-new unit to see if it solves it?

on my faulty tps, if you check it while it's cold it will work flawlessly (i checked it with a multimeter), but if you heat it up it will work intermittently. this is why the problem was so difficult to diagnose, even with a multimeter.

Hey, I called bad hearing with my homey story about not being able to hear my bad bearings. Do I win anything? J/K, Glad you sorted it out!
