I'm currently rebuilding the rear suspension of my 1988 944 Turbo S to coilover.
When removing the rear dampers I figured it would be difficult to fit a rebuilt damper with coilover on the right side since it's pretty tight with the transmission oil cooler.
What do you guys that run rear coils say? Can I fit 2.5" springs?

We've got 2.25 on the track car, 89 transaxle with cooler, and Jim is right, it is tight. If the springs are new, you should be able to return them for 2.25.

I've got 2.5" rear coilovers on my TS (with the loop). It can be done. I moved/bent the loop a little away, and flattened some of the fins, and wrapped them to protect it (just in case).
I haven't noticed any sign of rubbing....

If you think you have JUST enough clearance between the cooler loop and springs, remember that your tranny will move under hard cornering loads because of the rubber mount holding it to the chassis. Your small amount of clearance may not be enough.

You seem to use a custom bolt for the lower mount Mike. As I recall, the original mount does not build as much as yours, so your spring is closer to the cooler than mine would be.
Great pictures!

Dan - he is using the racer's edge shock mount - and YOU need to use it too if you are using real shocks with 1/2" spherical bearings. If you use such a shock that is designed to be in double shear with the factory single shear bolt - you'll bend it over.
The factory designed escort cup shocks are designed to use the factory mount so they retain a thin rubber mounting eye - and it is reccomended that you keep the t-bars with them.
