Default engine dies at 140mph

well it's been happening at least twice a day now. could it be to the change in temperature?
well it first started at the light, iwas sitting waiting for it to turn grenn and the car dies for no apparent reason.
i then went onto the autobahn going home and i was cruising at about 140mph, then all of a sudden the car car dies on me, wtf!?!?!?!?!.
so quickly i turned on the flashers tried to go onto the slow lane, slapped it in neutral and then when i got to about 100 i put it in 4th and still no power, lights on everything.
then got to about 70-75 and i went to third, that's when it came to life and home i went.
checked all fluids everything is within limits.
what would cause this behavior?
it's been doing this for about a week now.
please help.
tia

Check the DME relay. Sounds like a classic failure mode for it

i'll try 150, with guru chip statesing 167 top. but i'll have to get new tires first and those whatchamacallits hidden valve stems and new wheel bearings beore i journey to 150+.
about the dme, why does it do that? if it goes, why does the car start back up and keep running?
when it dies why does it continue to work. i ahve a spare and i'll put it in tomorrow before i go to work. 0430 on the autobahn, nobody should be around.
special tool, it happens at least once a day usually on the way home on the auto bahn and going to work upon exit at a light or slowing down for a turn.
tia everyone

Could be the AFM too. My father's '89 951 would randomly die all the time. Replaced the DME relay and TPS to no avail. Put in a new AFM and it was perfect. Car had around 120k miles at the time.

This has to be the best post ever. I'm sure EVERYONE has seen the thread title and jumped in here ready to flame or cry "BS" and then sees he's from Germany where it's not only LEGAL but the whole reason our cars are fast in the first place! I love it! Beautiful!

As far as the problem goes - why can't you just pedal harder?

Just out of curiousity, what are your observed "normal" speeds on the autobahn? I've been told that it is normally about 110-120 mph but there are plenty of faster cars (the large BMWs, Porsche, Ferraris, even the occasional Corvette) that will get upwards of 150 fairly regularly. Truth or fiction?

I've had this happen before, but not sure what triggers it. I *think* it was to do with overboosting, and the ECU just turns off the wastegate control, so you get no boost. Car doesn't actually die, it just has like no power. After I replaced the stock chips with Autothority chips, it went away. It did happen one more time, when I hit 7000rpm in 5th gear with the Autothority chips. In my case, the boost/power never came back until I stopped the car, turned it off, and restarted it.

I've also pulled the code after it happened, and the trouble code shows the DME reporting Unexpected boost pressure - pressure too low (or something).

I never had it fixed, the problem went away after I replaced the ECU with a standalone.

Normal speeds are more like 90-110 or so, slower at places and faster at other.

The only time I've driven for more than a few hours and not being passed once was when I was gunning home from the Nurburgring at speeds of about 120-170 when traffic allowed, didn't care much about the speed limits even though there are a lot of restricted places.

I know, I know! Is this a U.S. specifications car?

Must have gotten used to the pokey U.S. speed limits!
