Cross post (ISV or Vac Leak?)

HOLY CRAP!!! Help!~!

Hooked up the compression tester one more time and actually found a leak. One of the IC pipe hoses was split on the bottom side.

So I go out to test it and see if any differences and

A. It idled perfect (not sure if the leak was causing the bad idle or somehow the ISV got unstuck,

then B. I take it out, run it to about 4th in full boost in each gear, runs strong then after pulling away from a stop sign, I notice a REAL LOUD spooling sound and have NO BOOST!! I thought maybe somehow hit protection and drove home, tuened car off to reset, then went back out and same thing.

Did the turbo just go??????

Sounds like my exact situation... DONT drive it anymore, the less damage you do to the turbo, the less metal you are inhaling into the engine. May be my case, retaining nut on compressor blade. Get that J-boot off and have a look, be prepared for something to fall out of the J-boot. Let me know. Oh, and the leak would effect your idle.

Great, so I fix a little problem and a huge one takes it's place!!

Ok, I didn't see any smoke at all. What causes that loud "whinning" sound?

You were doing the test run with a new hump hose right? The black connector. You werent too clear on that.

Check to make sure all the hose clamps are right before panicing over the turbo...

Yes, the black IC to IC pipe hose coming out of the IC.

No, not a new one, just put some heavy duty sealer on it to see if it made a difference until ordering a new one.

Although, I got back and checked it and the patch had no leak and all hoses are fine.

Well, if it IS your turbo. (it will be loud if its blowing off the intercooler hose if you didnt tighten it well) When mine was destroyed, the nut ON the turbo, in front oif the blades worked itself loose, and was being sucked in... it was hitting the blades as the turbo was trying to turn, its very audible.

If this is the case, could the turbo be puled and the nut jsut re tightned?

Yes, I came back and put the tester on it again and felt no air coming from it. ALthough, before the leak was found, I was still making close to full boost. So I can't see how it would go to NO boost for the same leak. But in any case, I did not feel any leaking.

Yep, thats the turbo! Good news, you have a nice paper weight! (sorry, I know your pissed I've been there) Actually, I sold mine for 40 bucks, so...

No, you cant. the compressor blades will be unusable, the bearings may not be happy, and the balance of the turbo will be off.

Also, if this is the case, have the intercooler cleaned very well, as well as all intake stuff including intake manifold (which you have to take off anyway for the turbo)

Gotcha.

Ok, just talked to my mech. and he said A. "944T's are usally pretty tough and they don;t go that often" guess he doesn't visit renlist much

B. SInce I didn't see any smoke and it is not making ANY boost, he has seen situaltions where the WG valve is completely stuck open and thus allows no boost to be made and the heavy rush of airflow through the WG could be the load spooling I am hearing.

Anyone else think that COULD be the problem?? Oh and he quoted me about 7-8 hrs for labor to change out the turbo

What type of compression tester is this and where can i get one to do the same thing?

It is a homemade tester. You can do a search on the details of making one. PVC cap and compressor hooked up to your IC pipe.

i thought of possibly the WG, but considering your hearing a loud spool sound, and not a rush of air, and the WG is fairly new, I ruled it out. you can test the wastegate by starting your car and puting your hand on the wg dump tube, if it warms up with the rest of the exhaust, your WG is stuck open, if it stays cool as the rest of the exhaust warms up, its good. Pray for the WG, but I doubt it.
