Default 965 vs. 951 on the track

I didn't want to beat up on my 951, as it is going to another Rennlister in the not so distant future, so I had the opportunity to take the family 965 to the track.

Both the 951 and the 965 are very capable right out of the box, but I was amazed at the pace of this 13 year old vehcile. I guess I should have expected that from what was the top of the line porsche, but it exceeded my expectations in just about every way. I was expecting a car that was difficult to drive at the limit (due to that heavy engine hanging out over the rear wheels) but I was lucky enough to have an instructor with a 911 who helped me learn the how to take her through the corners.

When coming back on the throttle the 911's weight bias was actualy a big advantage. The weight was over the wheels as soon as you hit the throttle, and the grip came earlier than it did with my 951s.

While the 911 will often get bad press for wanting to go through corners *** end first, I think that as long as the car was respected it would reward the driver with great feedback and grip. But I did find the 951 was slightly less twitchy at the limit, and I found it easier to slide the 951 at different slip anlges around corners when nessesary.

All in all it was a great experience, but now i'm left wondering what to do next. Even with the great speed and feel of the 911 I missed my past 951s (mostly the red one)....

Stock for stock I would give a large edge to the 965.

Now for the price of a 965 you can have one whale of a 951, lets say one with complete suspension, larger turbo, big brakes, etc etc, and in that case i'll give it to the 951.

I'm glad you posted this. I recognised the shape of your 965, but I never knew there was a 964 model. If what I read was correct the 965 has 320 bhp? So give the 951 300 bhp and youre probably right on a 965, overall lap times. Still... owning a bone stock 965 means more than owning a modified 951. The 965 is unaltered and pure.

The C2 Turbo's were rated at 315 hp and 332 ft/lbs of torque, this car is making a tid bit more than that because of an extra couple psi running through the motor. But I would not consider this to be a modded car at all.

As to owning a 965 meaning more than owning a modded 951, well that is personal thing. Both cars have their place in this world, and ideally I would like to have both.
