the car wouldn't start today after a short run around town and it seems the radiator fan won't shut off, so it drains the battery.
i've pulled the G10 relay (silver rectangular relay) to disconnect the fan so it shuts off. when i pulled the relay it was almost too hot to hold with bare hands.
questions:
1) is there any way to test the relay without buying a new one and swapping to see if it works?
2) could it be anything other than the relay? (thermostat comes to mind)
3) when i gently shake the relay it seems something is loose inside, so you can hear/feel something rocking back and forth and hitting the inside of the cover, is this normal?
thanks!

Don't know how to test the relay, but the common problem for the fans not turning off when engine is shut down is the radiator thermoswitch

The G10 has four internal relays and a timing circuit inside of the case so testing is problematic. If it has loose parts floating around inside it that is not a good sign. It would be a best to borrow a relay and see if swapping it out changes the problem.

quick and easy, remove the thermoswitch while the fans are running and see if they shut off, if they do the switch is at fault. If they continue to run then the most likely culprit is the relay. It is possible that one of the wires from the switch to the relay is shorted to ground and turning it on, possible but not likely.
