The fuel dampener is basically there to keep some level of shock absorption in the fuel system, it basically acts as a buffer. Think about when you're out washing your car with a piston grip hose nozzle, if you shut it off quickly it'll jerk the hose around a little bit. Do it many times in a row, and you can get some nice pressure pulses built up. The function of the dampener is to eliminate or greatly dampen those pulses in the fuel system. The fuel pressure regulator is what controls the amount of pressure in the system and can cause your car to run rich/lean. If it fails high (pressure wise) then it will let too much fuel into the engine when the injectors fire. It can also cause the injectors to lock closed (too much fuel pressure to overcome for the little coil that opens the injector).

Fuel in the oil is just a by-product of a rich running engine, or a leaking fuel injector.

IMHO, the little fuel injector "cleaners" are pretty useless compared to the full, take the injectors out and have them cleaned. They might help a little bit, but they are no substitute for taking the injectors out and having them ASNU'ed every 100k miles.

Dal.

Hi Hos,
Hey look at it this way. If the injectors
have never been change, you should consider
new ones. The plunger & coil within the
injectors must be very tired by now.
BTW, if you're interested, I've got a set with
less than 500 miles on them. Make me an offer.

Hi J Chen: Would the injectors be tired even if the Bosch Service Centre cleaned them out? they also checked flow, seals (replaced) etc.

How would i test the injectors and know that one or more are going bad?

The set you have are stock ?

I understand what hosrom 951 is saying about running rich and having fuel in the oil. (explanation)When the FD fails In some instances it will rupture the diaphram and fuel will be sucked into the motor by the vacuum hose that's connected to it. Causing a very rich condition. Dampeners do fail in this manner.
Now to answer hosrom 951's question about the noise he is hearing. When the motor decelerates without load you will hear the lifters lashing back. If you are in gear and decelerating the noise will not be heard because the transmission creates a reverse load. This noise is normal on all of the 951 motors I have heard that aren't under load.
