Stanalone all the way....
If I look back at all the money i have put into my motor, I would say the one best all round major 'investment' was the change to stand alone, followed by the Vitesse stg 2 Q/spool turbo of course.....

But a standalone will only be as good as the person who tunes it...
And honestly I think 90% of us will probably more sucessful with a good chip and minor tweaks with a piggyback than mapping ignition and fuel from scratch.

I'm a control freak, I love the idea of being in total control of every aspect of my cars fuel, timing and knock control. I don't find tuning mt stand alone hard at all. I Used conservative timing and fuel, start fat, log, tune, log, tune........ No problem (if you like to get into the 'details').
My car runs better that it ever did stock (with piggback MAP). I do agree, for the masses who dont want to invest a lot of money / time into their engine control solution, a good chip / piggyback is hard to beat but there are some really nice stand alone solutions availble for reasonable money these days. I am a big fan of the AEM system.
I personally don't see the complexity and details that others see in the AEM, I see an awsome degree of flexibility and am amazed at some of the tuning strategies you can use. Is is definately an order of magnitude more complicated that my Link system, but can almost do 'anything' anyone could possibily want out of a stand alone. I WILL have one on my car........

What I meant was that more isn't always better. Standalone isn't the best choice for everyone.
