Default Show me your custom heat shields please

I saw a lot of you making a custom heat shield(s) that covers the headers.

I searched this place (Dubai) and could find anything 'proper'.

I did a quick search and got few ideas, but i need info

So, everyone who has customized this heat shield kindley show my a picture, i need one it's still hot here.....

TIA!!

here's my favorite ( I know people will be sick... but WTH)

100% asbestos hot side cover (I actually put another blanket before sitting down the intake). And CEI (if I remember, fiberglass wrap) for the headers and downpipe.

Cool, do you have a pic of the headers?

Where did you get the asbestos from?

I can get one this week-end. I have a contact here in an asbestos mine. They use it for welding heat shield. (very very very good heat shield!!!) I put a propane torch on one side and my hand on the other... no heat at all! and it's only 1/4 thick.

But unfortunatly there's a propaganda sourounding asbestos right now, and it's kind of hard to get your hands on.

Any alternatives to asbestos?

I can't use ceramic or jet-hot coating since both of those services are not available here in Dubai.

I do not want to wrap the headers (sounds like a dirty job to me), so having some kind of 'blanket' over the headers would be fine.

As for the turbocharger, hopefully within 4-6 months i would start upgrading and have the hotside ceramic coated in the US and shipped here.......

Or am i causing too much trouble and headaches ? just wrap them with thermal exhaust wrap?

You should be ok with wrapping, some don't like the idea because it can trap humidity, but I don't know why they bother... they are made of stainless. Make a serch for jethot coating or ceramic... I saw a tread about this few weeks ago. Many had good and bad experience with this technique.

You might have a few different options. You can do some coatings yourself (http://www.columbiacoatings.com/800f...765ytrh567.htm). I don't know how well they work, I am pretty sure they don't work as well as Swain or HPC (they are more than just paint).

TonyG suggested a blanket wrap instead of a tight wrap on the exhaust manifold.

It isn't a tight wrap, but I guess it is effective. I have thought about coating it AND using a blanket. This might be overkill, but who knows. Maybe I will just blanket it first and see how that works.

Good luck

Hey, thanks about the blaket stuff. I trying to find what i can use without taking off the headers.

por951turbo: A pic would be super

Oh, i really can't order the ceramic coating stuff, since it would be in a can right? and it wouldn't ship overseas in that case

Given your shipping situation, I would say that your best bet would be one of the wraps. I would guess that your car won't see too much road salt...not too much snow in UAE, right?

You could PM Tony to see if the blanket can be installed with the exh mani in the car. I would imagine you can but it won't be fun. Might be a good time to replace some gaskets.

There is also this product which they claim is for installation without removal of the exh mani:

Post some pics and a review of the products you end up using.

Hosey its NOT in a spray can (aerosol) you spray it on with a spray gun 40-60lb pressure then take it to somebody who has a kiln as it has to be cured at 400 degrees

i use the thermotec header blankets, you don't have to take anything off to install them (at least not with my SFR headers) and they do decrease the temp quite a bit. they definitely don't decrease the temp as much coating though, i was able to compare my car and david floyd's car car back to back when we were on the dyno and his car with the coated headers was quite a bit cooler than mine.

Tommo: Please excuse me if i am mistaken, but didn't you inform me, a while ago, that you have a mate here who is restoring a Jag e-type?

Shaheed, so the best thing is ceramic coating right? if i can get that 'stuff' can a 'painter' use it? take off the headers, spray it on, then 'bake' it?

I really don't want to remove the headers, because i would go for a 'while your in there' list (oil cooler seals, gaskets and so on) which i don't have much $$ for since insurace and car registeration are killing me this month.

Those blankets seem like a good solution, financially and time wise.

I posted this thread because i saw so many of you customizing a 'blanket' that costed very little (~$20 or so) and taking a few mins (~20mins) to install with decent results. You guys should come down here, humidity hits 90% at times and temp. is high at 100F now (you can imagine during the summer it was 120+).

Thanks guys!!
