Default MAF Fail?

Well we have narrowed my current problems down to the MAF or the DME / KLR... assuming it is the MAF (we are going to swap in another DME / KLR and see, but the bets are on it being the MAF, my mechanic has seen a few of these fail recently), is having them fail common?

So my options are as I see it:

1. Go back to a stock AFM with an appropriate chip

2. Find a replacement for the MAF, but going back to autothority for $1000 + for a new one kinda bugs me if these things fail. Is there another source for a MAF that would just plug and play since I have the rest of the components in the car?

Any help is appreciated

I would think you could get just the MAF and it shouldn't be too expensive, I had to buy a 3 1/2" MAF for my M3 turbo about a year ago and it was only like $200, autothority better make you a deal on another since thats their part that failed.
