What do 944 and 951 Blocks sell for with unmarked Piston Bores? I tried to buy one recently and it sold within minutes for over $ 700.00. Is this typical?

Porsche parts are a matter of who needs what and when. If you figure the machine process for overbore cost $300+, then the new pistons,,,yeah I could see 700+.

I bought a very clean 944 N/A longblock on Ebay for $550 + $100 for shipping about a month ago. I'll use the block and crank and sell the rest (head, oil pan, pistons, etc) and hope I can get a few hundred for that stuff.
As others have menetioned, supply and demand on these is very elastic (WOW - I DO remember something Econ 101 15 years ago).

I just paid 1500 canadian for a good 87 944 block and then had to have it machined. So yes not cheap....I guess we better start babying these cars or the prices will just get worse!!!!

I think a known good block is worth more than an unknown engine if you are going to freshen it up. A bare block you can measure and inspect is a known quantity. A completely assembled used engine is a crap shoot. I paid top dollar for a complete 80k mile used engine that turned out to have worn out bores. I got some good parts out of it, but nowhere close to the value of my initial investment.
I wish we could get new blocks, but they are not available. Kolbenschmidt used to make sleeves that would allow the first and second over pistons. With these sleeves, you could theoretically repair any block with worn bores. If the order was big enough, Dart or World may run some. I do not think the alloy is a secret any longer. Anyone remember the Vega?

Now with new pistons available with the iron coating, you can get 100.5 and 101, the 101's should be able to salvage most bores that just aren't gouged.

Ski:
The new pistons solve the cost issue for Mahle oversize pistons. But at some point, the blocks will be beyond 101mm. Although it may be a long time.
