Question HELP...Turbo Broken on my '86 951

The search function is not working and so I could not find anything to help me. The turbo on my '86 951 track car has apparently gone bad. I'm told that the impellers are all out of whack and that the bad vibrations have cracked or even broken a couple of the mounting studs. Any input on pricing to replace turbo with a new one, a used one or to rebuild my turbo??? I have been told that the job to remove and replace the turbo calls for 12 hours. Is this correct? I'm being told that this is going to cost me @ $3000. This sounds high to me.
Please, any input will help.

Which turbo are you running?

I would say ~4 hours to replace the turbo......

That's way too much. You can buy a good used turbo on Ebay for less than $ 300.00 and intallation should be 5 to 6 hours @ $ 90.00 p/h about $ 450.00. Which shop is doing the job?

If he is using the K26/6, expect a used one for $50 or so, you can them upgrade it and rebuild it for $300......so yes their prices are high.

More importantly, why did the turbo go bad? If you don't solve the root problem your new turbo will be toast as well, and you risk damaging the engine.

Sam is right. How many miles on your car?

I have a K26/6 that has an Audi hot housing with a lightened compressor, this turbo was put together by Chris Cervelli. $300 + ship, includes the downpipe already on it.

BTW, I'd never step foot in that shop again unless it was with the DA and file rape charges.

Definately way over what you should be paying. Where down south did you take it that they gave you that estimate? There are a number of people on here that have had good experieces with having their stock K26 turbos rebuilt by magestic. I am in a similar situation in that my turbo has little bit too much radial play. Nothing to be overly worried about, but I will need to replace/upgrade it eventually. You could change out the turbo yourself. It really isn't that hard. There may even be a rennlister or two from down south that would be willing to lend you a hand.

Are you in goldcoast PCA? My region, suncoast, has done doubled up events at Sebring with your club a few times. Wonder if I have been at the same event. Hmmm.
