Hosrom ... thanks!!!

I find it amazing the people do all the upgrades etc and complain that they don't work. With some testing they always find that the basics are the root cause of their problem ... usually vacuum hoses or exhaust leaks or something similar. People need to build a solid foundation before they can upgrade

That's the only way any upgrades will work. I wonder if half the tuner complaints don't originate from the above listed issues?

For a stock car why not just pick up a set of used APE chips. If used correctly (i.e. in the manner instructed ONLY) they work extremely well. They can be had pretty cheap require the least work to install (no MBC) and produce plenty of HP.

If used incorrectly there have been reports of problems. If you ask any of the reputable vendors, I am 99% sure they will all tell you that when used correctly the APE chipsets are very good.

I completely agree, that is why it is taking me so long to start upgrade performance on my car. As a matter of fact, after the new set of tires i just got, the only thing left now would be new leather seats and a full body paint job.

I am even thinking of holding the paint job a couple of months ($2,000 from my specialist ) and replacing ALL sensors/senders in the car.......anyway but's that's just me!

Matt: Arn't the APE chips 'for off-road use only'? or something like that?

But everyone who has a set of these are using them and passing emissions anyway (or was it those europroducts chips?)

Not to hijack this thread, just to address few points.. TT and I are working together. We have many new items ready for release. We just released a MAF conversion for the 911 3.2, we will be releasing a new (totally redesigned) MAF chips for the 951/944. Of course lots of enhancements keep making their way to the AFM chips.

And i am sorry once more for mis-typing/midleaded (if i did to anyone), i had NO intention of rating your chips (or anyone other vendor's product) without actually purchasing it.

In fact, i'm so close to purchasing chips that i am considering yous

No hard feelings?

I have some Europroducts chips for an 86 951 for sale. $100. I passed emissions no problem with these. And like mentioned above, if the chips are used as they were intended, then there should not be any problems.

Hosrom, almost all aftermarket parts tend to be "for offroad use only" that limits the manufacturers legal liabilty in the event of litigation

Since we're somewhat off-topic as it is. . .

Could somebody tell me more about this FQS thing? Is it a piece of hardware

I want to be able to toggle between low and high boost, and I was planning to just run a dual stage boost controller, but from the sounds of it this isn't possible on 951's. So much to learn.

Thanks.

Jeremy Himsel,

Two questions.

1. wouldn't an 18psi chip from Guru tend to be more powerful than a 15 psi chip from Vitesse or any ohter vendor, simply based on 'more boost = more power?

2. Which of all the chips you have tried spool quicker and have more low end get up and go? I am a green driver on a 14 turn track, which often puts me in the situation of wanting low end torque at certain points, in stead of having to downshift and then seconds later upshift. BEST LOW END AND SPOOL?

Thanks Jeremy.

FQS = fuel quality switch. It's a small rotary switch (I forget how many positions, but it's several) located on the DME. You can access it through a hole on the side of the DME box after you remove a plug.

Not really, the K26-6 is out of breath anyhow. At 18 psi you will make more torque than at 15 but not more HP.

BTW I meant to mention that when I went from 15 psi to 18 psi chips, I gained about 30 hp and almost 40 ft-lb. This is with a K26/8 and it did require upgrading the stock injectors.

Jeremy Himsel,

When you tested different sets of Guru chips, did that include the 18psi or not?

Since you are one of the few who have tested several chips on a mostly stock car, you are a good resorce. Thank you for helping the rest of us, Jeremy.

I've looked for, but cannot find, an article written by Chris Cervelli (formerly Technodyne Racing) that basically states that for a stock-turbo'd car with basic upgrades (intake, test pipes) it didn't make sense to spend a bunchof money on chips outside of the basic chips/jetted banjo bolt set up...Anyone have that article? The old Technodyne website is long-gone...?

So many questions. I tested the Guru and Vitesse chips @ 15.5 psi. The Vitesse chips have the ability to run 18 psi by using FQS position 3 and a AFPR. At equal boost levels, the Vitesse made about 15 more HP and 25 FT/lbs. I did not attempt to go higher because I built this car for my Dad and it was being shipped to NJ. Knowing how nuts pops like to get (and how cheap he can be when buying gas) I kept the boost levels down enough to keep a grin on his face. This virtually stock car with a 26/6 not an 8, made 285 ft/lbs.

Blueman, the other chips weren't even close to making the low-end torque of the Vitesse chips.

Personally, I think it's insane to spin a 26/6 beyond 18 psi but that's just me. I prefer my turbo to be spooling within a reasonable efficiency range. As far as the chip thing goes, a few of my friends told me I was nuts trying all of these different chips but I was looking for one that gave me the best HP and TQ without any sacrifices. The Vitesse chips had it and if it didn't, I would have gone back with the Weltmeisters.

So far this year I have built 3 951's (complete motor R&Rs') and have a fourth in process. What has always amazed me is the guys that show up at my place telling me how great their cars are running and after I take it for a drive I immediately point out several "areas for improvement". This includes stumbles, hesitations, and detonation.

It's funny that Cervelli was mentioned. He was one of the original guru's of 951 performance. He made it clear that after APE chips, the development of the 951 chips and performance was dead because they hit it spot on in the early 90's. Guru racing came along and it was a sort of "changing of the guard" because they were destroying the other chips on the market. Now I see that many guys here believe that same thing Cervelli did when it comes to Guru chips. Reality is the guy who developed those chips (TT), and essentially created the hoopla, is still improving his design and they're available at Vitesse with perfect drivability and no shipping dramas.

There were three 951 owners who witnessed my dyno and seat of the pants results that are all looking to buy vitesse chips. I think they're holding out for the desert temps to drop or a group buy.............................
