Default CLUTCH QUESTIONS

Hi all,
Started having a clutch problem, still have a good high pedal, but cant select gears.

Im going to look into it further, but pretty sure i need a clutch.

Can anyone tell me how many hours to replace a clutch in a 944 turbo.

Also a friend has a 924 turbo race car and has a spare clutch, will this fit the 944.

Thanks
Dean

What year is the car? does it have the updates 2 piece X-over pipe?.

If yes, expect some 12 hours or so

If not, expect adding 2~3 hours extra.

Some people would say 18+ hours, but my specialist did it on a 1 piece x-over pipe in 13 hours, including replacing the rear main seal.

Min is also an '86 with 1 piece crossover pipe, again specialists know exactly where to go....that is why it was faster for him. Some even took out the engine and saves 3~4 hours in total (i do NOT recommend that).

This should help:

http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index..._v2&id=108&c=4 (Part 2)

Also check this:
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/clutch-01.htm

By the way, on my '88 NA, my specialist took 8 hours to replace, not 16 as mentioned everywhere else...i do not know why it takes so long for some people.......

Your friends clutch fits right in there - both 225mm. Ford spline. Don't let any knucklehead tell you it doesn't.

Just get a centerforce clutch (claimmed three times more clamping force than stock).

Or check out lindsey racing, the have a number of clutch kits available....

No, specialists usually have things like lifts, air tools, large variety of tools, etc. I have done 2 on my 951 with a one piece. Expect the book time of 24 hours if you do it by yourself for the first time. Laying on your back and having to crawl in and out from under the car is a real time waster. With a couple people, you would shave a couple hours off.

aus930..........I did mine a month ago, it's not difficult, the mechanical procedures are very straightforward. Even with the one piece downpipe.
Soak all fasteners several times with Blaster or a similar product. To contradict hosrom_951 many guys have had problems with the Centerforce units. If you want to upgrade from stock the KEP unit is outstanding. Paragon offers them.

BTW........my symptoms were the same as yours.......good pedal but couldn't get the trans into gear..............this is what I found

Dam those broken springs looks so familiar.

I replaced my clutch as well (from Lindsey Sach Cup). I suggest purchasing new bolts for the new pressure plate and new flywheel bolts and replace your rear seal since you are right there. There are ground straps on top of the clutch bell housing not mentioned in the manuals. Be careful with the sensors. Unplugging mine caused them to crumple in my hands. I had the use of a lift and power tools and it took me 16 hours (now that I have done it once I am sure that I could do it in a lot less time; however, I wouldn’t). The next time I have to replace my clutch my questions will include “do you accept Mastercard or Visa?”

Aus930 - yes, without question your friend's clutch fits. But you CAN get a spring hub disk to get rid of the rubber center and not go with the solid 931 disk, if you want. The newer 944NA disk only has the larger 4 springs - not the smaller springs that are the troublemakers.
The one in the picture above is a 951 disk, and that is 245mm. and will NOT fit your car.

My specialist recommends replacing almost every hardware (bolts/nuts/screws) when doing any major job.....almost.

Also recomends using copper-based grease when removing locked/hard to remove bolts.....since these nuts/bolts are 13+ years old (at least) it would be a good idea.....

YEs definetly replace everything while you are in there, that includes all bolts. Lindsey racing sells a kit for 65 bucks with all the PP & FW bolts (Minus CV axle bolts if you want to replace them), guide sleeve, pilot bearing, clutch fork bearings, alignment tool. Only other thing you will need is the clutch disk, PP, and throw out bearing
