Thumbs up 968 / 951 Hybrid moving closer to reality....

I am planning on droppnig a complete 951 drivetrain into a 968 shell this winter and I have been working out all the details and doing the reseach for the last couple of weeks, and yesterday it took a big stepforward when I found a wrecked 951 local to me that I can use for all the nessesary donor parts.

Many parts of the project are up in the air, but this is going to be a budget transplant at first, then if possible we will go for big power. But Mild mods at first (chips / test pipe / FPR / etc) should give the car more grunt than just about any N/A 968 running around.

The plan as of right now is to get the suspension and brakes up to the task of some track work and have the car be ready for Driver's Schools early next year.

I'm sure there will be some headaches, but buying the parts car will make things a lot easier, and I have a 951 in the driveway to referenec when ever I run into issues......

Ian,

The vulture in me is curious, does that wrecked 951 have a temp/fuel level gauge in good condition?

Good luck with the project, sounds like fun.

Cyrus,

I'm going to try to make this conversion look as factory as possible so I might be using the 951's cluster, but if thats the case I have temp/fuel gauge from my 968 so that should work for you. I'll need to look over the new car to see exactly what i'm dealing with. I'm going to see it saturday or sunday....

Nice, that's a good idea.
I'll bring it up next week.

Thanks.

Hey Ian,
I planning to do the opposite. I'm looking for a good 1st
generation 924 body to transplant my 951 into it to built a
GTS Carrera. At the same time it'll save quite a fare bit of
weight

that's funny.
I've been dreaming of keeping the 951 body (lighter)
and throw in a 968 engine and tranny.
then the turbocharging begins.

we should swap Ian.
(I'm dead serious too)
My engine is making 320 rwhp

Cyrus ... have you cleaned the grounds behing the instument cluster? That usually indicates a poor + or poor ground. Try this first before you change anything out.

J Chen,

Actually the 924 w/ a 951 motor is also something I've wanted to do for a long time, a 924 GTS replica would just be nice to have in the garage. But this swap all sort of happend in a more random manner. Afer picking up the 968 and driving it back to back with a 951 I decided that I just prefer the 2.5L powerplant, and then figuring out the value of the 968 motor I seems like a very plausable swap to pull off, or i sure hope I can anyway now that i've committed myself to try.

Do you know for a fact that the 968 chasis is heavier? I would think they are fairly close to that of a 951....

And well, if you were not so far away a motor swap wouldn't be a bad idea, but I've already purchased the parts car, and the motor has a buyer. So if the buyer backs out i'll let you know. But I don't want to start with an expesnive 951 motor. I actually plan on leaving it mostly stock and concentrating on the suspension, and the driver at first......

as a fact, the 968 chassis is 200-300lbs heavier

EDIT: the 968 does come with standard options which made it heavier (air bags, abs, etc)

I was asking about the bare chasis, no air bags, no electronics, no interior, just the unibody, fenders, lights, bumpers, etc......

I'm willing to be they are a lot closer than 200 / 300 lbs.......

I was thinking a trade strait across.
You get a performance motor
I get a newer motor

EMW,

If you were accross town it might be a consideration, but its just not practical. And I happy with the way things have worked out..... 968 motors come up for sale a couple times a year, good luck with your project.
