I looked into the 968 tranny swap a while ago. I seem to remember someone saying that it's been done a few times, but requires some custom fabricated brackets and maybe a modified driveshaft. Also, I do think it's weaker, but I was considering rebuilding one to 968 turbo s specs (you know, if I won the lottery or something), which from my research involves just a stronger ring & pinion. I'm still quite interested in this modification, so if anyone's done it, I'd be curious to know.

NZ951: I was not talking about their gearboxes, i was talking about their axles/cv joints since those are the main week point for us. Are they interchangable or not? how much sh#t can they take? (power that is).

Oh I see, my bad, then why not go for lightweight GHK units? (sp?) they seem very good... a bit expensive but hey, worth it.

But it would be nice to see a 928 tranny in a 951

as the GHK is concerned, they are complete axles. If the CV joints were availavle seperately, i would have considered it.I contacted Dave regarding breaking a transmission or anything inthe drivetrain, he said that they never broke anything on their track cars (maybe it is due to propershifting unlike us )

So far, i never heard of anyone breaking an axle, but breaking a cv joint i have heard.

By the way, there was a post earlier regarding the flywheel. Someone posted something about the fedanza flywheel for the 944 turbo.

Well, i stumbled on their site and it appears that they have complete axles for sale.

Does anyone know if these are stock or lighter/stronger ones?

i thought the 968 one was stronger. i remember someone (john at vitesse?) saying he'd used both and the 968 was definitely stronger - there were some issues with the r&p in some gearboxes or something.

ring and pinions are the weakest pionts in our transmissions, hard shift (with loads of power) could break them (www.tech-session.com for info on this).

Interesting, I thought the R&P weakness only applied to the 968 boxes, which is why I stayed with the 951 box. I've never broken the R&P, and I drive the **** out of my car.
