do you have to drop the crossover pipe to remove the wastegate on an 86 with one piece crossover? i don't remember doing that the last time i took the wastegate off (several years ago), but in looking at it today it doesn't appear physically possible for it to come off otherwise.

Definitely do not need to remove the crossover pipe. If I recall correctly, you will need to remove the dump tube first (pipe going to the cat pipe) and this allows you the room to get it out. It's been about 5 years since I replaced my wastegate but I know for a fact that you do not need to remove the crossover pipe.

joe, that's the way i remember it too, i removed the dump tube but there isn't enough room to disengage the wastegate studs from out of the inlet pipe. i did put on SFR headers on the car recently and i had to push the crossover pipe with a pry bar to make it align with the new headers. i don't know if that threw things off.

The procedure for '86 with one-piece crossover is similar to the Clark's Garage procedure. What works well is if you first remove heat-shield for the starter. Then you can remove the hanger bracket bolts from the clamp on the torque tube. Then loosen the clamp and slide it forward about 3-4 inches on the torque-tube. This gives you wiggle room. Then remove both sets of flange bolts from the wastegate. Remove all four going to the crossover and all four from the dump-tube. A 13mm socket with built-in wobble really helps here. Once all the flanges are loose, you have enough wiggle to get the wastegate free.
The cars with 2-piece crossovers can leave the dump-tube attached to the wastegate and remove both as one unit.

danno i have all bolts and flanges loose, including the hangar bracket bolts. the wastegate moves freely. the problem is that it only moves forward about 1 inch before hitting something.
