Default Oil Filter on change

I spent some time searching but couldn't find the thread that talks about cranking the engine (without ignition coil) after draining the oil to get the oil out of the filter (so that it doesn't spill all over the power steering unit, etc.

Does anyone know how long I should crank it, and if it's even adviseable?

Thanks in advance

I suppose that would work but why not just use the plastic garbage bag trick? You get a bag with no holes in the bottom, put it around the housing and quick plop the filter in it. Not much mess but it is very tight working in there.
