Default Tire trailer and hitch for 944 Turbo

Hi All,
I did a search and found some information, mostly for a 944. Has anyone installed a hitch for use with a tire trailer on a 944 Turbo? I think the Turbo has an extra aero part under the bumper. I just bought a second set of rims for the track and need a way to get them there.

I'm looking into this ...

I'd be thankful for any advice or direction before I dive into this.

Thanks,
Mark

Randys been driving to tracks for years with his 928. He needed a set of track tires so here is his solution. I think he has a nice looking setup.

Thanks. Looks like these are bumper mounted rather than mounted to the frame. I suppose a bumper hitch should be adequate for pulling a tire trailer.

a4944-

If you end up fabbing a hitch mount and putting together a trailer, could you document your steps? I will probably need to do this in about a year or so. Good luck and post your progess.

I see a lot of these at the PCA AutoX events around here. Most mount and unmount the hitch for the runs. They have a varity of configurations ranging from a couple of ploes extending vertically, to a fully enclosed aluminum sided unit with shelves and tie downs, vent and locks. It's very light and trailors well. There are a lot of this type of units avail. The trailer hitch was locally purchased. Mounts in about three minutes. Very clean straight forward install. I think I am going this route.
I can get pictures next month if anyone is interested.
Good luck.

I know that people use these trailers all the time, but I sure hope you think long and hard about using one yourself because they can kill you in a heartbeat. That is more than enough weight to swing the rear end of a light car like 944s and put you in a ditch on your roof. I almost lost a friend when he was towing a small single axle trailer with 7 X-mas trees on the back when it flipped his explorer over and tumbled down the highway end over end. I've towed a lot and it's JMO but cars are for driving and trucks are for towing.

Is that an issue of tongue weight or too much weight? I know nothing about towing as I have never done it. I do know that tumbling my beloved 951 doesn't sound fun!

I am planning on going with the Harbor Freight trailer. A friend has one and it works well. The hitch is the tough part. U-Haul will sell a DaLan hitch. The DaLan hitch appears to be the only non-custom hitch for our cars. It will apparently route over the 951 wing below the bumper and attach to the bumper and to the spare tire well. Has anyone installed a DaLan hitch on a 951? I read a post where someone did not think it would work with the aero wing on the 951 but I think they had it installed on a 944 and never tried it on a 951.

944Willie, I'd be very interested in details on the hitch that you have. Is it the DaLan? What type of hitches do the 951 guys have installed.

This web site has a side picture of the DeLan hitch although they are more expensive than some other sites.

Thanks,
Mark

Both improper tongue weight and too much weight can both conspire to ruin your day but when towing with a car, specifically a car never meant to tow or tested towing, even with everything in order you still run a big risk. Just think about it (if you've never towed before you may not realize this) but you are tying a few hundred pounds behind a car that is fairly light. What happens when that trailer begins swaying back and forth? Try pushing on the rear of your car from side to side and see how much sway there is. Going down the road at 55 it doesn't take a whole lot of force to swing the back end around and at that point the trailer is towing YOU.

That makes sense. It is probably not the best way to save money.

Just for grins, JC22, what do you tow with?

Max,
Currently I have a F250 diesel with 4 full doors and an 8 ft. bed. I've towed all different sized loads with anything from large cars, small SUV's (Blazer), 1/2 ton trucks, and HD trucks. Two things I've learned if you're shopping for a tow vehicle, overkill is good and the longer the wheelbase the better. I don't want to tell anyone they can't tow with a 944, I just want them to think about it long and hard beforehand.

The 944 is capable of towing. Porsche offered a factory trailer hitch. If it was such a horrible idea, I doubt they would open themselves up to lawsuits like that.

Motorcycles are also capable of towing but that doesn't make it a good idea. My wife's Civic is capable of pulling my truck down the road on a chain but that also doesn't make it a good idea. I'm just telling you my experiences with towing and asking that you think about it beforehand. I can't make anybody do or not do anything all I can do is offer up my experience. Whatever you decide, slow down and be safe.
