Tire trailer and hitch for 944 Turbo
#16
Not only did they offer a factory trailer hitch they offered a towing package. It consisted of coil over shock helper spring setup. Sound familiar? Don't most racers have this setup so they can tow their track tires?

IIRC the towing limit on the 944S (according to factory information) is 2300 or 2500 lbs (above 1500 lbs, I think it is, they suggest trailer brakes as well).
Tows very well, gets some looks with its tail lights and phone dials!!!

Hi,
I fit 4 wheels and tyres in the back. I put them in garbage sacks as I have white carpets and the wheels are usually, hot, sticky and very dusty when I put them back. They are 16x9 and 16 x 7.5 turbo S forged wheels with slicks, tools and helmet go into the centres.
I have deleted the rear wiper as I didn't want to break the glass by accident there isn't much space for it but have carried them with it in - If you leave it remember to close the hatch carefully.

I have a seat back brace (Kirkey road race seats) and a roll bar taking up the back seat area. I can't get the four tires back there anymore or I would definitly give that a try. I'll probably just order a hitch from U-Haul (think it's the DaLan) and give that a try. I'm surprised that nobody with a 944 Turbo on this forum has done this. I'm not in a big rush. I have to wear out a set of street tires that I already have on the rims.
Thanks,
Mark

Getting ready to buy the DaLan. Giving the thread one more try. Any one have any experience with the DaLan on a 951? The car was in the shop for something else and the Porsche mechanic thought it would not be worth the labor to make a custom one.
Thanks,

I've got one, give me a few minutes to post a picture.
Jason
Here it is, it came on the 89T parts car that I got last month. As you can see it bolts thru the bottom of the bumper and to the body as well. It looks like a production model, but I don't see a name, just the part #.

Here is another interesting set-up using the Porsche roof rack:

It's possible to fit 4 wheels in a 944 even if you have a rollbar and full interieur. All you need to remove is the passenger side rear seatback, so you can use the right rear footwell and seat (this is a matter of removing 4 bolts/nuts). There is room to spare for a jack and one or 2 sportsbags with clothes, etc. Full rear visibility remains.
Last week I drove 5000km down to the Nurburgring and back and didn't quite feel comfortable doing all of this driving on R tires (or worn R tires on the way back ). This was with 17" Cup I wheels with 225/45 and 255/45 tires stored in the car. On a seperate occasion last week I also transported a set of 18" 996 GT3 wheels in similar manner.
I fit it as follows:
* one front wheel standing behind the passenger seat (seat needs to slide about halfway forward on its rails), outer rim of the wheel facing forward. If you are intending on bringing a passenger, I would definitely use one or more lines to secure this wheel solidly to the rollbar to avoid any injuries in the case of an accident).
* one rear wheel dropped into the right rear seat from the trunk
* one rear wheel to the left front of the trunk (against the harness bar)
* one front wheel to the right rear of the trunk

The above hitch requires drilling into the bumper (aluminium, they all require that) and also drilling into the spare tire well (the factory hitch and custom hitches do not require that). The factory hitch (and the good custom hitches) fasten to the bumper, the bumper shock mounting bolts, and have two slightly sculpted arms that extend forward just a bit and fasten to the frame of the car via two mounting spots that are already there as an integral part of the chassis.
That's the only way I'd tow. And it tows very well!!!

Jason, did the 944 Turbo have the lower wing attached? These lower wings are not on regular 944s. I'm curious if the hitch fits over the wing or if you have to remove the wing. I'm still looking at options so Bill is welcome to the hitch. That's the part number for the U-HAUL DaLan hitch.
Thanks,
Mark

Yes it did have the lower valance, the hitch bolted thru the spare tire well just above it. Fit with no problems.
