A: New O2 sensor. your fuel mileage will also increase, trust me.
B: Drive the **** out of the car before rolling into the testing centre. A HOT cat is an efficient cat. A cold cat can fail your emissions test!!!!! seriously!!!

I agree, drive the car hard for about an hour before testing. My 86 951 was due this past April for an emissions test, which I dreaded because I know it's major $$$ if it fails. (My 86 NA fix to pass was $$$, as it needed O2 sensor, AFM, etc. The car isn't even worth that much). So when the turbo's turn came I put the best Mobil gas I could find, Chevron fuel injector cleaner, drove it far...then failed NOx 1st try by just a bit...brought it to someone to adjust (retard) timing, ever so slightly, $45 later, took it back, and passed! I was so glad it cost me only $45 and the gas and the smog check itself...got lucky for another 2 years. Good luck.

Heya Tom, FWIW (I'm not positive about this), but I think if you get collectors plates you don't need E-check.. can anyone else verify this?

hey danny P - your right...BUT i have a little cop who loves to sit on Route 20 just outside of town and watch for me to pass by in the p-car! he'd surely notice the collector plates and stop me - from what i've learned collector plates (historical plates) can only be applied to occasionally driven cars - h'ever i should really research this - because i would slap on a cat bypass tomorrow!

the chips might be your problem, some chips advance timing at low end to give a little more off boost grunt. Unfortunately advancing timing also increases production of NOx. I have had several cars where we had to burn a chip with stock timing to get the car passed.

SHE PASSED!!! - well new O2 sensor and a "drive it like you stole it!" drive to the emissions station - did the trick! she is back on the road! thanks to all for your insight and help!! this board has got BOOOST!

If you still have the original O2 meter, I'd just change that and do a retest. I had the same problem when I got my car, and that's all it was. No problems since in two subsequent emission tests.

What was your Nox reading at 25mph if I may ask?
Was the car running hot when you tested? Heat increase Nox I believe.
How many miles on the cat and 02 sensor?

I JUST had my car tested today and had the SAME result. I need help FAST!! Car has 15psi guru chip set, tial 38mm wastegate with 3 bar fuel reg. I don't think my car has any vacuum leaks and the car seems in good condition. What should I do because I just spent like 2k on the car in the last month and don't have the cash to put more major money into it now.

Take a look at your plugs to see which cylinders are running lean. If just one is lean, then check the injector seals and intake to head gaskets.
If all cylinders are running lean then you have either a basic mixture problem, a vacuum leak, or an intake leak upstream of the injectors.
If the O2 sensor had failed the engine would be running rich, not lean.
BTW: Stock is, well...., stock. Along those lines, my '86 is chipped (Guru), ReliaBoost MBC, 3.0 BAR FPR, stock exhaust, stock WG, and it passed NC emissions with flying colors. Additionally I know that a chipped NA with a test pipe will pass NC emissions.
