Question hooking up narrowband rennbay air/fuel gauge

Purchased one of these quite a while ago but have just gotten the chance to try and install it, i purchased an oxygen sensor at same time as thought uk cars were not equipped with them, i thought i would check at dme just to make sure there wasnt one hooked up at pin 24 but discovered there was a green cable connected there as described in fitting instructions, so i hooked it all up, now when i start car the gauge goes up to maybe the third bar on gauge then drops back down to nothing and i dont get any more readings, do u think my car actually has an o2 sensor?? or maybe its something i have done in hooking it up?? i have checked it several times and dont think that there is anything wrong.
any help would be greatly appreciated
TIA Graeme

No O2 sensor? I am sure that ALL 944's were equipped with O2 sensors. Where did you install the O2 sensor that you purchased?

i havent installed the 02 sensor that i bought, i just connected the air/fuel gauge up to the green cable that goes to pin 24 at the dme, i was assuming that as there was a cable there that there must be an 02 sensor at the other end of it, i have read before that pin 24 is usually not used if there is no 02 sensor

Hi Graeme where are you from?

Do you know if you car has a CAT? If it does then it will definatly have an O2 sensor.

The O2 sensor is used to prevent the car runnig rich and fecking up the CAT.

I fitted a narrow band meter to mine. If you are not too far away i can meet up and give you a look.

To be honest i think they are a bit of a waste of time. Get you car properly set up on the dyno. If you dont adjust anything they there is very little to go wrong that a narrow band will help with.

i cant remember!! i fitted a 3" straight thru ss exhaust from hayward and scott just after i bought the car about 4 years ago, i am pretty sure that it did have a cat but then am unsure if the part of exhaust the 02 sensor is on was replaced at that time, where exactly is the 02 sensor on the exhaust anyway???
i live in montrose, about 30 miles north of dundee, where did u put your car on a dyno?? had my car booked into a place called rjm in glenrothes that has a dyno a while back but usual story with these cars, sumthing broke and i didnt manage to go!!

I doubt the bit where the sensor is on was replaced, its quite highup on the exhaust. Do you have an email address i can send a diagramme of the exhaust system to you will give you a better idea.

p.s. i am in Glasgow so not exactly next door!!!

I got mine done at Star performance agin in Glenrothes.

I fitted a new wastegate so i have to get it back on the dyno soon, will prob be using Dastek near deep sea world at the Forth Bridge.

The O2 sensor is mounted after the exhaust manifold. On the crossover pipe i believe. Even if the car was removed/replaced, the O2 sensor should still be there. As for the green wire form pin 24, i BELIEVE it should be yellow. I shall check up on that and get back to you. By the way, what a/f ratio gauge is it? if it is from autometer, then you need to connect the red wire from the gauge to the ignition, get a ground (from DME, Ashtray or near hood release latch) and THEN connect to O2 sensor. There is a tutorial on www.autometer.com regarding installation.

glenrothes must be some place for performance car tuners!! there is falkland performance and rjm just across the road from it and star performance (never heard of that one). was at deep sea world a couple of months abck so i know where abouts u are talking about, my email addy is grdm26@hotmail.com.
hosrom_951 it is the rennbay gauge that replaces the clock in ur dash and i am sure that i fitted everything as per the instructions, it says on them that the 02 sensor definetly has a green cable

They're for keeping an eye on whether you are running way lean or something. I installed a used one because I was worrying about reports that APE chips run lean, turns out they run rich!

It's wired loose in my glove compartment, when I want to use it I just velcro it to my dash. Those lights bouncingback and forth would make me crazy otherwise, it only gives a good reading under hard throttle.

I think its worth installing, it amuses the kids if nothing else.

So what's with you guys listing your mods one on top of the other?

Scroll, baby, scroll!

How about giving our index fingers a break, and take out the returns please?

Thanks!

i am just in the process of having a few parts changed on my car and was just wanting to use it to make sure that my a/f wasnt way off until i manage to get my car on a dyno, also my clock was bust and it seemed a good way of getting rid of it.
I am sure my 4 year old son will be most impressed with it (when i get it to work!!)

My '86 euro spec 951 didn't have an O2 sensor, and I couldn't find any sort of a bung for one either... so I had to get one welded in at an exhaust shop. It came out pretty good, and I'm hoping the spot also works for a wideband unit... see pic..

i was thinking about drilling a 16.5mm hole in exhaust and tapping it m18x1.5mm to take 02 sensor but thinking about it maybe the wall thickness of exhaust would not be enough to get a decent thread

Try asking some local exhaust shops for an O2 sensor bung, somebody will have them for sure. I think I paid like 5€ for one... then just drill a hole and weld the bung in there (or, if you're like me, pay for somebody to do that - even if I had any welding gear, I couldn't use it worth #½!! )
