I am using water, 89 octane (California) pump gas and custom GURU chips.
Obviously water does not increase the octane rating, but lowers the need for high octane
Leaded gas is not a good idea for those with catalytic converters, as I am sure you all know.

No need for container, just pour it in! ![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Actually, due to the thread, I picked up a gallon of Xylene today also from Sherwin. The guy at the counter said "heading to the track tonight??" I said you are the first person I bought this from that knew it was used for cars.
I said no, just for some long weekend fun

Definately go with Xylene over Toulene. Higher octane and usally cheaper. More bang for the buck. Both aeromatic hydrocarbons.

"So adding 2 gallons of Xylene to a 20-gallon tank would give you:
Octane = (117*2 + 91*18) / 20 = 93.6 octane"
So not much use to add to a full tank of gas.

Yeah, but that extra 2.6 octane points will allow you to run 1psi more boost at the knock/detonation limit. Which would be worth 10-15hp.

I'm running 50% 101 unleaded race gas with 50% of the 91 octane peanut oil available at the pump here in CA. I end up at 96 octane, which does nice things for my 3 liter 951 turbo @ 8:1 compression.
I've tried toluene, too, and liked it a lot, but I can't find it anywhere cheap enough to use. The race gas is ~ $4.85/gal. There was a Union 76 dealer in San Jose CA that sold 100 octane at the pump for $4.25, but he switched over to deisel instead.
There is a non-street legal 100 octane that has a higher motor octane than the 101. I hear the motor octane is more indicative of real world performance, so might try that.
Before I turned up the boost, I was using an octane booster called Liquid Horsepower by Manhattan oil. My mechanic said it did great things in his boat - seemed to help a little, but nothing like toluene.
Has anyone found toluene at less than $5/gal?
Thanks
John

as Todd has already said you should try xylene. I can buy it at home depot for 3.25...per gal. With the gas prices here that's only a doller more than the normal premium 93octane at the pump. If you give them notice I got a guy who can buy it in bulck and you can get it for as cheep as 2 bucks a gallon. That's the cheepest I have ever seen it. Although I have never been any other places to look for it.

I use a 91 octane and 100 octane mixture. Performance 76 faxed me a mixture chart of 91 - 100 octane. I normally keep my car only half full so I use a mixture of 3 gl of 100 to 6 gl of 91 which gives me a total of 94 octane according to Perf 76 chart they provided.

I didn't realise this was your first post. Welcome aboard.
How long have you had your car? 3.0 ltr turbo 951? Not many of those around. I'd like to meet up with you one day and see that thing.

Hey - lotsa replies - great fun, and thanks for the welcome.
FIrst off, $3.25/gal for Xylene means that Johnnie is going to Home Depot real soon, now. I found that toluene not only made it eager to rev, but seemed to smooth out the engine, as well.
And, I'm thrilled to find out the Union 76 on Almaden is still selling race gas. I think at some point they got some grief from Union 76, and they switched to Trick brand. From the few things I found on the web, the Trick looked a little better than the Union 76. Then, they told me they were going to deisel at the end of the month, so I started looking around and stumbled across All Points Petroleum, I think in Benecia, or maybe Martinez. Anyway, they'll deliver a 55 gal drum for no extra charge. There are many things to worry about when you have a drum of gasoline in your garage, but being short of high octane gas isn't one of them.
I've had the 3 liter for a few years. Had about 0.7 bar boost - all my mechanic wanted to do with it. He said Porsche made a few 3 liters, and rated it at 300hp, so that was the most he wanted to do. I think he lost his first attempt on the dyno, doing considerably more than 300hp. The garage partnership changed, and the second guy was happy to dial up the boost, so now it's just a little over 1 bar, and 370hp and 375 ft-lb at the rears, - it is big fun.
So thanks for the tips, and is it still $4.25/gal for the Trick at the Union 76?

Hi Ed,
I'm in Berkeley, but I'm an electronics consultant.
That means I'm a barnacle on the Silicon Valley Whale, so I'm in Mountain View once or twice a week. I'm over on Bernardo and Central on Monday's and sometimes Tuesday's - send me an email jreyk@comcast.net if you want to take a peek sometime.
regards,
John
