I am ready to unbolt the cam tower from the head and remove it for my first head gasket replacement. Do I have to be careful in any way so nothing falls out?

The tappets or lifters (whatever you want to call them) may fall off the top off the springs. Keep in mind the cam tower is holding the pressure of the lifter springs so when you unbolt it the lifters prongs will expand and lift the tower up.

It helps to have an extra pair of hands to help keep the lifters in the cam housing bores or to pick them up if they fall out. Try not to lose track of which bore each lifter came out of and leave them sitting upright and in a clean area.

yeah roll it towards the exhaust manifold and try and keep the lifter's in.
I also put each lifter in a can and filled it with oil to help keep them lubricated.
I have also heard use brake cleaner on the head with a rag to help clean it up before you sand it down. as well as the block. I plan on using 400grit.

Jack the drivers side of the car as high as you can, and lower the passenger side. That way the lifters are almost vertical when you rotate the cam tower off, and much less prone to slide out.
