brake feel, m030 vs non-m030
hi all,
question about brake feel...my 88 non-S seems to have much more initial bite than my 89. initially i put this down to the rotors and pads on the 89 being a bit tired and past it, but i've recently had them all replaced and they feel the same.
do the m030s feel a bit more spongey than the 88s?
i'm mostly after feedback from people who have driven both non-S and S (or 89 etc) cars, in case there is a difference in eg master cylinders or lines or whatever, i don't know. because i know people have upgraded to m030 calipers, rotors etc from non-m030 without changing other parts of the braking system and have found them to lock up much more easily, which is definitely not the case on my two (stock) cars - i sometimes cause the ABS to kick in on the 88 after driving the 89 because they bite so much harder.

Hi,
What you describe is also what I have observed of all non S and S I have driven (11 cars from model year 85 to 91).
Mainly because of wider tyres, cars with M030 feel heavier, and although M030 braking power is superior it feels like the biting point is later than on non M030 cars.
I would therefore tend to think that what you experience on your cars is fairly normal.
edited to add : it felt the same between a friend's M030 S2 and mine (non M030).

Also note that the updated vacuum application to the booster in the turbo S' can cause slightly different feel. I have noticed a difference in feel between the 87 and up vs. the 86 as well as the MO30 vs. regular, but I can't really say I like one all that much better than the other. Overall the lower effort required for the 87 and up seems nice, but it's not very significant difference overall.

I think that suspension condition will also have an effect on brake feel. If you have softer front the weight transfer onto the front wheels would be greater (more initial bite but earlier lock up) worn components could also have an effect as could ride height.

The same applies to the big reds in our cars. I have an 87 with standard 951 brakes (they bite sooner), and I have an 88(Non M030) with big reds, and they tend to feel mooshier and bite later. so I'm not convinced that the weight or suspension is the reason, since my 88 has the better suspension, and it's also lighter.
