Torque tube bearings - average mileage to make noise?
My 944T has 93k miles and a groaning/rumble coming from the rear. The seller included rear wheel bearings which I was going to install and the transaxle could use output seals.
At this mileage, is the noise more likely wheel instead of torque tube bearings? Is there a definitive test I can do during a drive?
thanks

1) Jack up the car and place jackstands for safety. You will need a nice, very quiet place to do this diagnosis. Put the car in neutral.
2) Remove bolts from coupler between torque tube and transaxle input shaft. Slide coupler back towards transaxle until they are not longer coujpled.
3) Have someone hold in the clutch pedal. Reach in the large hole to turn the drive shaft in the torque tube. Bearing noise will be apparent. A mechanics stethoscope can help.
4) If no noise from the torque tube bearings, Rotate the rear wheels separately. Bearing noise will be apparent.
