I agree with Justin, check your throttle position sensor. I had an issue where the engine would rev by maybe 500 to 1000 rpm. It would do this at idle and sometimes off throttle (but in gear). Everything I read pointed to vacuum leaks. Turned out to be a bad TPS.
Clarks has a great write up for testing.

I installed the new cap and rotor, and switched out the TPS ( I have 3 spares). and I drilled and tapped the nut on the end of the fuel rail and installed a 1.5" gauge...... and when I closed the hood.....it put a dent in the hood!!!!
Well, I havent driven the car yet (because I couldnt close the hood) it did hold about 40+/- while running, and held pressure for several hours after shut off.

Just took it for a test drive after the new cap/rotor and #2 TPS. It seems to not hit a wall after 4k.......BUuuuuut... I think the clutch is slipping. I could nurse it to about 5K and just depending I could get the WG to open (boost set to 15) but other times it would get around 5k before the WG opened and it would all of a sudden spike towards red line and things got nuts, then I let off got a couple pops out the back.
Looks like I got a spike to 17psi, so if you can imagine (3.5" exhaust, Screamer pipe) with the WG opening +/- right around where it starting to slip and, and the RPMs spiking....it was a bit chaotic.
