Default Upgraded Turbo??

Well, I do beleive my turbo is on its way out...and I might be finally getting into some money soon, so just curious, what would be a good upgraded turbo, under 850....and what other modifications would have to be done?? Thanks in advance

i'd say make sure everything else is up to snuff first. more power can magnify any problems that you may already have but don't know about yet.

along with a turbo, you'd probably need chips/injectors/wastegate (maybe)/exhaust (to get full benefits)....

Since you speak of your car having many issues to iron out, I would suggest picking up a used k26 and bolting it in, then if you must have some more power, throw a chip in till you get everything else ironed out...just a thought. To control a new turbo you have a few options, some better than others: piggyback, maf/map w/ piggyback, custom chips, etc...so even if the turbo is say 650..you will still be spending money to control it, and when turbos get upgraded you will almost surely need bigger injectors as well. So as you can see it will add up quickly.

What everyone else is saying is dead on... stick with a stock unit for now. Get the car running properly first, deal with all the maintenance issues, and then start modding. Personally, I would rather have a new wastegate on a car with a K26-6 than I would a bigger turbo with a weak wastegate. After the wastegate, do the chips/mbc, after that, take a look at the exhaust (cat bypass for sure, and a 3" if you can swing it AND tolerate the noise) and then you can think about a turbo/maf/injectors (which should be done as a system, in my opinion).

Regards,

chips, wastegate and MBC, cat bypass, plus or minus MAF. You should be able to hit 250-260 rwhp and 300 ft lbs with that

I myself after some minor ironing out to do. I am planning on replacing ALL sensors in the car. From then, i shall try to squeeze as much power as i can keeping as much stock components as possible. Im keeping the K26-6, the wastegate would be shimmed, increased the fuel pressure to 3 bar, chips, MBC, exhausts system. That would give me (my opinion) eenoughpower for daily basis. Uuntilmy engine see's a rebuild in the future, the and ONLY then i would be looking at injectors, turbo, wategate, MAF/MAP, higher boost, crank, head etc. So, just like others, maintain it now, squeeze out small improvements, then later on, you might go for bigger mods.

i wouldn't say that. you may just need to do something about the loose nut behind the wheel.

take that money and do some autox's or a de or two. believe me, i wouldn't have minded if my car was totally stock for my first couple of track days. more power means a steeper learning curve.

Get a used turbo that is in need of a rebuild.

Send to a turbo shop, and have them rebuild it and beef it up.

I will be selling my turbo soon. It has about 5,000 miles on it, excellent condition. KKK 27/6, its only oil cooled but I would give you the parts needed for the conversion. Quite a few people here run it without any problems. It includes the adapter for the stock J-pipe as well for the stealth look. Plus a set of upgraded chips for your car. Plus wastegate shims for 15 PSI of boost. Plus ARC2 or Link intercept link for fuel adjustments. Plus boost gauge to be sure that you are not boosting too high. Plus boost controller. All together for $990 plus shipping.

I bought the whole setup from David Floyd. The car is running great now, I need a new turbo to play with. That's just how I am, its my hobby. After everything is sorted out and runs great, I am getting bored. I will supply the J-pipe also which I cut and fitted with the adapter for the 27/6. I can supply chips for the 86 to 87 or 88 to 89 cars if you don't have chips your self.

Every car is different and needs finetuning thats' why you need the ARC2 or the LINK intercept.

There is another post where somebody sells a 27/6 plus APE custom chips and APE MAF. The problem is that the old APE MAF doesn't come with a A/F adjuster like the ARC2 or intercept LINK. Custom chips are fine but only work on one particular car. In this case the 42lb injectors will make the chips worthless for everybody else. I don't want to bash anybody here but I think if you are an honest seller you should mention everything not only the good stuff.

turbo951fan,
Out of curiosity, how much power/torque do you put down?
It sounds like an excellent deal for someone looking to upgrade on the cheap. IIRC, you got the 60-1 from David? Should be a nice upgrade from the K27......
