Where do you guys purchase the 17mm allen hex socket piece to remove the trans oil fill and drain plug? don't see them at sears, the only place i see them is in the perfomance products catalog and it cost $30 or so which i think is a little steep. any help plz.

Sears sells the allen wrench - I think it's around $20.

I know it's not an allen socket but it'll still do the job on the tranny plugs

Air-cooled VW shops have them. Some autoparts places have them too (and harbor freight, snap-on, etc.)

Some guys find a bolt with a 17mm head, and figure out a way (double nut, weld. vicegrips) to grip and turn it out. Likely to strip it that way...but you never know...

Be sure to remove the upper plug first. They often freeze up, and you don't want a drained tranny with no way to fill it.

Checker auto parts has them as well for like $10. Not the best quality, but it does work.
