AFM to MAF

AFM to MAF
Was wondering about this, I tested my AFM output signal on my 89' S2. It gives a linear 0-5vdc output proportionnal to the barn door opening. If you could find a MAF which has a 0-5v output (which many use) and that comes from an engine that has very similar air flow charactaristics to my 3.0L, would the DME actually need to be reprogrammed? Seeing as the output signal is the same and the MAF just uses a hot wire cooled by the flow of air passing through instead of a door, the DME should be able to read it correctly?

The voltage output in relation to airflow isn't linear unfortunately. You could map the curve if you had a reliable way of measuring air flow but you will probably find the curves of the AFM and MAF slightly different due to the different measuring techniques. It would be difficult to find something that worked perfectly.
At that point TBH it would be not much more expensive to go for a MAP based standalone like the MSPNP and remove the AFM all together.
