Default the end of the 11 month legacy

well ive had my car for 11 months and 1 day now. and have finally made the decision to sell it. what i had been told was a correctly working car has been far from, and its time to cut my losses. gotta fix the front end and then let her go. its so sad, but i cant afford the damn thing, both monetary-wise and time-wise. now i have no idea what to get. lookin to spend maybe 7 grand, thinkin a mid-90s chevy blazer. i miss my truck and the ability to haul stuff. any ideas as per a good vehicle? was thinking a 325is but i cant do this spend-millions-of-dollars-fixing-a-busted-european-car thing

Darn... Whats currently wrong with the car, and what are you looking to sell it for. We have a couple of KCWS members looking for 951's, and you are close enough, we might be able to work something out.

its got a little oil leak up front and the rear suspension sags a bit. theres a crack in the paint on the rear right quarterpanel that developed last winter. the car has a salvage title. otherwise the interior is A++

Is the 951 a money pit? I think not. If the car is not abused and regularly maintained I believe this is among the cheapest super cars you can own. With some modifications you get a car that can compare with Ferraris at a price of a few services at the Ferrari garage. But.. if your alternative is not a Ferrari but a Chevy Blazer, then I can understand your disappointment.

I must agree with Bengt. The 951 is one of the most economical performance cars of the era, with few mods and you have supercar performance. Maintenance must be done and you MUST know what you are doing when working on it.

The problem is with neglected cars, sooner or later someone will pay for it.
Cars are inexpensive enough, people buy them, figure out the cost of upkeep (especially if they are not familiar nor do they do their own work), use the car up then dump it...

Dime-

That's a bummer. You are definitely right that these cars CAN be money pits. If you are not fortunate enough to get one that was very well-maintained, you can be in for hell. It then all comes down to part prices and labor costs.

About your other alternatives, are you thinking E30 (1980s) or E36 (Mid 90s) 325is? They are both great cars IMO. Not the same kind of car as the 951/944 though. If you don't like the maintenance costs of the 944, don't buy an E30 M3. It is one of my favorite cars, but it is actually more expensive to maintain than the 944.

Check out Roadfly.org for info on the 325is. I owned an E30 and an E36. They were significantly different from each other but both great. Neither of these cars, if well-maintained, are exceptionally expensive to maintain. I would hunt down a nice 1988-1991 325is with no rust. It is a joy to drive and easy to maintain with a bullet proof engine.

point taken about *performance* cars needing more maintenance than a garden variety honda for instance. maintenance on the 951 is still more costly than on a toyota supra, for instance.

I am sorry things have gone bad for you guys, but when I entered this arena I was told by a long time 951&968 owner, that it is better to pay a little more up front and get a car that has been properly maintained. After 7 years and never having a major issue either with my prior 944S or now my 951, I can tell you those are words to live by.

Good luck for the future

What's up with the cracking? Is this the original repair from 1988/9 just now going south or was the car recently painted?

I am very sorry to hear about your situation. If you don't buy a car that was properly mantained you can get a real money pit. I have yet to have a major issue with my car and I have had her since feb 03. I wish you the best of luck with your sale and future purchase of your next car/truck.

I think total maintance costs this past year and few months is like 2.5k Which in my opinion aint bad. I mean a 400 doller car note every month would be alot worse. These car's are cheep supercars for sure.
