Default Test Pipe installed but weird noise...

I just installed a used Bursch 2.5" Test pipe this afternoon. Wasn't too hard, but advice to those who want to do this: It is much, much easier to just take the catback part of the exhaust along with the cat converter because of those 2 bolts at the top of the cat -> muffler connection.

Well after squirming around under the car with little ground clearance, I finally finished the install. After that I cleaned up and went for a drive. She started up perfect, no issues there. The Bursch with SFR 3" Catback is loud, pretty loud but I actually expected it to be louder. I will do a video clip this week sometime to go along with my other 2 exhaust videos.

The major concern though is this weird noise. When I went for a drive I warmed her up and gunned it in 2nd gear. I couldn't remember when it hit full boost but it wasn't as fast as I expected it to be. And once it did hit full boost this squeeling noise came out. Not sure where it was from but it was a high pitched squeel. A little later I did another 2nd gear run and it squeeled again but not as loud. What do you guys think this could be? I am only hitting around 15psi of boost max in 2nd gear when Reliaboost is set at 18psi.

At first I thought maybe my tires were squeeling but I thought how could that be, I have LSD...so now I'm thinking maybe exhaust leak? But the noise was more of a mechanical squeel...I used to be able to hit almost 17psi in 2nd gear though. I'll test tomorrow again to see what RPM I make full boost at. Thanks in advance

I would bet $50 it is an exhaust leak. This is probably causing a loss of boost too. Sometimes the flanges on the wastegate dump tube gets too deformed to get a good seal.

Craw underneath and see if any of the heat sheilds are rubbing against the test pipe. Mine did this when I first put it in, sounds like nails down the chalk board x10.

Any change the exhaust is rubbing on the axle shaft? Can't remember how close it is.

That just might be the sound of your turbo spinning.

Thanks alot,
I'm pretty sure its a leak or the pipe hitting the heatshield because I remember being concerned about that when I was under the car. I will also check the axle rub but I don't think that its the turbo spool sound. But then again if it is, thats an insanely weird noise.

Where would I get Bursch testpipe gaskets?

Jason 86 951 how did you solve the problem of the pipe hitting the heat sheild?

bend the heat shield with a pry bar. Exhaust gaskets can be had at any muffler shop. Just take in the old one and match to a new one

There is a special crush type gasket that you need to replace every time you remove the pipe from the down pipe. If you didn't replace this gasket, I would bet your noise is comming from there.

the bursch gaskets cost me about $30 or so plus shipping. Would be pretty easy to cut your own with material from a parts store though. Only place I could find them was called german auto parts online or something like that(Danno always recommends them).

I doubt its an exhaust leak that making the noise.
When I installed my test pipe it didn't make any noise untill it warmed up and then I thought the car was going to explode, the noise was insane. I wasn't sure if all 4 of my wheel bearings went out at once, or I ran over 6 cats and they were all screaming and stuck to the bottom of my car.
Mine was the heat shield thats about halfway down the length of the test pipe.

I have never heard of an exhaust leak make a squealing sound. You might want to check the tension on your accessory belt since this is the only thing I can think of that would squeal. It could be coincidental.

Well I retightened the gasket on the pipe that the wastegate dumps to and then moved all of the heatshield out of the way and what do you know? No more squeeling, thanks alot guys!

Now the question is when do you get full boost with the Bursch Testpipe, it would be especially good if you had the Guru MAP kit and Tial WG so I can compare easier. Thanks again!

Oh and I guess as a reference point, say you floored it from a stand still (not launching though) when would you get full boost with the Bursch? Mine still seems kind of high...

Say... in 5th gear and you floored it. With your set-up, should get 15psi by 2800-3000rpm. Then 18psi comes on around 3400rpm.
