Default Guess what a Porsche WG costs

Hi All

Just received my Tial Wastegate and adapters from MySwiss.
A quick word of thanks to Steven, whose customer service is top notch!

Just for a laugh I phoned the Official Porsche distributor here in South Africa
and got a price on a new Porsche Wastegate for a 951. (incidentally they are very pleasant and helpful guys, I bought my car from them)

The answer: R16,074.00 that's approx US$2,329.00
Sometime ago on of the rennlisters from Oz proposed the Big Mac Meal
as a standard for comparing affordability in different countries.

for the record my new Tial cost me 140 Big Macs
a porsche wastegate would cost me 804 Big Macs.

Any one know what the price is in the USA and other countries ?
add your cost in Big Macs if you feel like it.

Well I was curious so I just called Porsche of Arlington and checked:

The wastegate runs $1495

So, in Big Macs, which I think are right around $2, thats about 750 Big Macs.

My estimate on Big Mac prices may be off, I haven't been in a McDonalds in a long time.

Ouch. At least you guys have Superformance...just read an article on their new Shelby Daytona coupe.

Now for a bit of OT......as for the Big Mac suggestion, it's fun to use everyday items to help conceptualize pricing power. The Economist has set up a Big Mac index which compares prices of Big Macs worldwide against the United States. You could replace Big Macs with wastegates and call it the Rennlist Wastegate Index.
Here's what the Big Mac index looks like:

Agree Paul. Check out Switzerland. That had better be Black Angus beef.

Thanks Ken for two interesting web sites.

Jimmy price has a plant I think in Port Elizabeth one of our coastal cities.
He also does the Noble M12 GTO (chassis and body) which then gets shipped to the UK. I actually saw one of the Superformance coupe's
at Zwartkops ( a local track I go to a lot) awhile ago. Didn't know what it was at the time but I distinctly remember the designed by Peter Brock not e on the window.

Went to the Economist but found the Big Mac Index is subscription only
but saw in the lead in that the South african Rand is undervalued by 68%.
Gee and here I am going on a foreign spending spree because it had dropped from 10 to 1 to about 6.50 to 1 to the Dollar.

No problem Max. Strong growth in ZAR over the past year, doing well today as it looks you folks might host the 2010 World Cup. Should be great for business. Now's a good time for you to pick up some tuner parts here in the US. Or at least that's the excuse you can use.

You live in a beautiful country, I hope to visit some day. BTW, the price of a Big Mac in SA effective 12/03 was about ZAR 13.17, undervalued by almost 30%.

I went to a McD's in Russia once, and I thought it was incredible the amount of food I could get for $10! I actually stocked up on big macs and cheeseburgers so I wouldnt have to eat Russian food for a few days.

Not from there originally, but I worked in Lausanne briefly. It is a very, very beautiful area... and only 3 hours away from the Autobahn

Living there is expensive, but not more so than in the SF Bay Area...

Gary.

Hi Ken

Yeah great news!. We are hosting the 2010 soccer world cup. I found out on Saturday afternoon, I was driving home from a local track where I had been watching a mate race his Lotus 7. I had never been there before and got lost trying to find the main N3 highway, I was driving through a really dodgy part of town when suddenly all these cars come past, horns blowing solid and fists waving out the window. Fortunately on the half hour the news came on the car radio and I heard the good news and could relax, for a while I thought I'd stumbled on a turf war or something.

If there are any South Africans lurking on the forum (I've never seen a post, come on guys) now is the time to buy some goodies.
Companies like Europarts (MySwiss) can land parts at your door, fully insured in 9 days at half the price. A good example is braided stainless steel brake lines, unfortunately the shop I use had already comitted to a local supplier ( or should I say importer) and they were double the price.

Using 4.85 US-dollars for a Big Mac Meal (+medium fries and Cola), I get an equivalent cost of 59.8 Big Mac Meals for a Tial 38mm wastegate at retail pricing.

I'm following Warren Buffet's lead in putting my money in foreign currency to offset the upcoming inflation in US-dollars.

You're welcome to invest your foreign currency in my car for the next year or so.
