S4 Brake Question

![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I have been reading about the S4 brake upgrade using the search engine and I have one question about wheel size. It is my understanding that in order to upgrade to the S4 brakes, the phone dial wheels will not fit correctly. If this is correct, then I will ask this question: If my car has the optional plate wheels, will the S4 brakes fit with them or will I need to upgrade to a 17" wheel. I have gathered that in if I were to upgrade to the Big Reds, then I would definitely have to upgrade to 17's.
I would appreciate nay info on this matter. Also, where can I get the best deal on a power steering rack for my 87? I am still trying to figure out which companies have the best deal on Porsche parts.
Thanks,
Michel

Considering that your wheels came stock on the 928S4 (which had S4 brakes btw
), yes, they will fit. Those wheels are forged Fuchs, and I understand that the only diference between them and the Club Sports was width and the size of the brake cooling cut-outs.
As far as parts, I have ordered from 944Online, Paragon Products and Rennbay and highly recommend them all. Rennbay has rebuild kits for your steering rack, most suppliers provide rebuilt racks by exchange. If you do go rebuilt, get a long rack (rack plus inner tie rod ends and tie rods.) Well worth the price, especially as the inner tie rod ends seem to wear out first (at least mine did.)

Thanks Don,
I was not sure if these were the same wheels that were on the 928. I knew they had the same design, but was not sure if they had the same dimensions. Also, would you or anybody else know what the going rate is on a pair of front S4 calipers?
Thanks for the info.

Front S4s go for 300-400 these days, IMO not the best choice for the money - get 993 fronts, they're also big blacks, and go for 300 a pair usually, and you're getting a caliper that's 10 years younger.

Thanks Sam,
If I go with the 993 Blacks, will the wheels need to be upgraded as well. I am trying to figure out what order I need to buy all the parts. If the stock wheels won't fit, then I will need to upgrade the wheels first, then the brakes.
Thanks,
Michel

Sam,
I just realized what you were saying. Correct me if I am wrong. The 993 calipers are the same as the S4, but just newer. I am slowly learning the differences between all of the calipers on the different model Porsche's and which models might have shared the same components.
Thanks,
Michel

I was under the impression that the S4 brakes were tha same onse that were put on the 951 turbo S. And onl yrequire 16" rims. The 928 GT brakes(big blacks) and 993(big reds) are the same (exept colour) and will require the 17" rims.

Big Blacks and Big Reds are NOT the same, they have identical piston sizes, but different sized pads and are radiused for different sized rotors. Refer to the chart for details.

I assume that mmm951 is talking about upgrading to 304mm fornt rotors and 951 turbo S brakes? (which are the same at S4 brakes!!)

The S4 brakes will fit over 8" phone dials, but not the 7". There is no problem with radial clearance; the problem is axial clearance. I believe the Turbo S front wheels were 7.5", and I think they were forged, and therefore with thinner webbing, so that's why they fit over the S4 calipers. I have S4 brakes, and that's why I use 8" phone dials all around. Even with these, the clearance is about 1/16". I have a line on some ZOH 7.5" front wheels, and I'm going to see if those fit, so I'll have some spares.

Are 7.5" wheels real? I have heard the Turbo S and 928GT Clubsports use a 7.5" fronts, but I have a set of each and they are 7".
The S4 brakes fit under the forged fronts, the Clubsport or the 'flats', which (are the same wheel as the clubsport but with a smaller cutout.) I do not know if they fit under the cast wheels like the D90 or the phone dial but they probably do.
