Default Motec M4

Hi,

Looking for some input from people running Motec. I know most standalones like Tec3 and SDS supply distributorless ignition, however, is it necessary to switch, what kind of results have people found with the M4 ECU and retaining the distributor system. This is for a dedicated race car.

Thanks,

Andrew Wojteczko,

As far as I know I havent hered of anyone running a M4 on a 944turbo. Not because it isint a kick *** system which it is. Just due to the fact that a nice m4 with all the turbo trimings run's anywhere from 3500-4500 dollers. That's alot of money for a sometimes 6 or 7 thousand doller car.I have a friend running a m4 on his eclipse and he loves it. But, for 4 grand he had better. Bob Norwood a tuner here in dallas loves the m4 and swear's by it. He is the one who did my friends eclipse and tune. His new integra top fuel dragster also uses a m4 motec. Those car's cost anywhere from 125-150k so if it's good for him I would say it has to be a pretty nice system.

I will see if I can find you a link to a motec sight with info on install.

The 3.0L 951 I had used the M4 PRO (Wideband, Data Logging,...). There are other systems that perform as well if not better for a fraction of the cost. The Motec user interface is not the best. At the time customer service and support left much to be desired.

Andrew,

I am using a Link stand alone system with the stock distributor. Works fine, Can run wasted spark / sequentional injection if required. Pretty cheap setup.

Yeah, unless you are putting wheelmarks on Buckler's GT3 at Daytona, the link is your best bet.

wwmotorsports, are you running just the ecu with the original distributor?, what options do you have, wide band etc? Where is the best place to order from?

Thanks,

Seems like it, Fast above made the comment about them being poor in the service level.

How do you determine the quality of the Motec over other systems? Many ECU manufacturers have the same component suppliers.

Yeah WWM - but once again, Motec has risen to the call by RAISING their friggin prices.
Let me tell you, I have been in business for 14 years, the name is only going to carry them so far before they and all their dinosaur dealers are goin under.
Even their own dealers who carry more than one brand will tell you to go the other way unless you are Jonny-Joe hero Pro racer - certainly not for a club schmoe runnin 54's and sellin parts on the side.

I'm familiar with the Motec, especially the M4, but wouldn't buy one today, given what's out there. Motec has had poor and arrogant service for as long as I've known them (1998). Haltech, AEW, Apexi, Electromotive all now have systems that do nearly as much but with some extras Motec doesn't have or the same features and more.

On the cost side, all the other major systems run $1-2,500. That's the cost of a Motec wiring harness. Motec's tend to run about $4-4,500 installed, but not pre-programmed.

Ok,

So what is the best way to go then, just get fuel control, or fuel and ignition?, is the stock distributor a problem?
And which ECU is best, I have posted before about SDS and Tec 3, what about DTA, has anyone had any success with that?
Also, with Tec 3, or SDS is it worth getting the crank fire ignition, or just fuel management?

Thanks so much,
